Re: Pay off Collection?

Boswd,

If a payee claims they never received a USPS MO that I send them CMRRR, then I need simply complete a PS Form 6401 and the USPS will do a payment inquiry. If it comes back they are claiming they still never cashed it, then the Postal Inspectors might be paying 'em a visit.

devhip,

If I've let on that I trust CAs, that's my bad. I know all too painfully well how dishonest they are.

Re: Pay off Collection?

That wasn't addressed at you Noah. Actually I'm on your side. I learned the hard way. I will never, ever give out my checking account and routing number to any CA, for any reason. Or my debit card. For instance, on one account the CA was unable to debit an entire payment on my card, so they hit my account 3 times for smaller amounts. All went through. And all were subjected to $35 "over the limit" fees. $105 in fees from my bank. As far as checking, I've had CA's take 2 payments at once, overdrawing me, screwing my checking account and getting overdraft fees as an added bonus. It's just a bad idea to give a CA your account info, end of story. There are many other ways to pay. Message Edited by devhip on 04-30-2007 02:36 PM

Re: Pay off Collection?

Noah -  I've said  about collection agencies I know it all too well, was in referance to the fact that I have dealt with collection agencies for the better part of all the past 6 years.   I have had a number of accounts go to collections.   Now you can jab all you want, I really don't care,
You think I work for a collection agency because I don't agree with some of your advice such as not paying the debt unless then give you a PFD.   What ever.   I was just making the OP aware that , that is very dangerous advice and can have some serious consequences that you failed to mention to the person of what can happen when you refuse to pay.

As far as the whole check  vs. money order,  do what you want.   Do what ever you feel safer with.  CA can be scumbags and say they never got your paymenat and then there is a longer hassel proving it as compared to seeing cancelled check or your debit card transaction posted to your account but whatever you feel most comfortable with.   I personal like to see the official receipt on my bank statement

As far as what happened to you, it sounds like we both have been in similiar situations.   I would have loved to have to have had the  ca agree to whatever terms I found the most afforable, but that's not reality.  Reality is most CA's arent going to start a payment plan without something upfront first.   I have had to negiotate on a couple of occasions an  installment of a couple of pay perionds just to pay the down payment to get into an affordable payment plan.

So,you can on calling me whatever I just don't care   But if you are going to give someone very risky advice just make sure you tell them of the possible ramifications that may come from it.   Go back and read the this OP and read down,   this person was on their way to telling  their CA go stick totally unaware that there was a possbilitly of them being suled.

That quote is wrongly attributed to me, FYI...

Think about it...if I write a check to the grocer, and a week later he somehow uses the information to go into my checking account and grab a couple hundred bucks, he's going to prison for forgery (if he writes paper checks with my account information) or wire fraud (if he does it electronically).

The difference is....you didn't sign an installment agreement with your grocer at one time. I agree it's bad, but it happens. Again, read the fine print. They build provisions into contracts that create loopholes. It's happened to me....twice. Why even create the possibility? "The law is on your side" sounds great on paper. While you're out suing a CA for double-dipping I'll continue to use money orders, bank wires and payment services (Western Union, etc.) to pay my collection accounts.

Re: Pay off Collection?

I'm sort of in the same boat. I did decide to pay evrything or was fortunate enough to get them deleted. It could possibly drop your score temporarily as it did to my eq but it raised my tu and ex. I made a choice to be honest and pay the debts. I benefitted by applying for a personal loan with a low fico and was approved based on everything now showing current, zero/transfered balances on all charge off and collection accounts. They saw my efforts and approved me. It did nothing for my fico but it reminded me that  doing the right thing has its own rewards. Trust me when I say low score. If score improvement and purchasing a home is your goal than this can be a step in the right direction. I don't know many lenders willing to fund a loan/mortgage when you haven't paid others in the past which I am maturing now and can understand. I in the past someone asked all my friends for a loan and never paid why should I risk my money?

By reading the forums I realized my score would benefit from reducing my revolving credit. My util was over 90% util and now it is between 10-25% on indiv accounts and under 25% total util. According to some contributors they have seen gains of 9-17 points for one card being reduced. If fico uses 35% of its score based on how we are using our credit if my math is correct approx 298 points are up for grab in that area. If you have maxed out or cc over 50% this can give you a boost in 30-60 days once all the dust settles and everything is updated.

That has the potential to be huge. You could be house ready in less than 6 mos. There is no quick fix that is why they say when considering a major purchase pull early so you can fix inaccuracies.

I am still waiting it has only been 3 weeks so only one of the ten has updated. I'll keep you posted on point increase.

Good Luck!

I mean God, if you have the money to pay off your debt in Full,   just do it and get that out of your life,   Getting yourself out of debt should be priority number 1 then go back and look for ways to raise your score.

'paid' is not out of your life, unless you can successfully pay for deletion.

'paid' is still derogatory, and will still screw up your credit ranking. it is adverse. you've just gotten dinged for doing the right thing -- and for doing it by paying above and beyond what you legally owe the majority of the time.

and god help those who are dinged after being threatened and coerced into paying for accounts which are truly not their own.

'paid' provides some peace of mind; but it is not the peace of mind of deletion of a derogatory that can end up costing you percentage points or even straight denials.
