Just need to vent a bit. I upgraded my BCE to BCP a bit over 2 months ago. On my end I calculated I met the $1000 spend required for the $150 SUB already, so I initiated chat with Amex CS to verifiy that. The CSR I got on chat was horrific and kept telling me my spend thus far had only been ~$530. This was a concern for me, as I didn't want an error on their end to cause me to lose the SUB in a couple of weeks. I had the CSR list out all of my transactions since upgrading the card and found that he was leaving out an entire month of transactions for a statement period, Jan X - Feb X. I kept telling him what he was doing wrong and he said there were no transactions during that span. Finally after 40 minutes of chat the CSR admitted he was wrong and that I was right, so I was good to go in terms of meeting the SUB requirement.
An hour later I go to the grocery store, get to the checkout and my BCP gets declined. Tried it twice more, declined. As to not hold up the line and embarrass myself, I used my Discover to get out of there giving up 1% in getting 5% instead of 6%. Whatever.
I get home, put away the groceries and try to log into my Amex account. Can't get in, wants me to reset PW. Try resetting PW, doesn't work. Can't chat this time since I can't log in, so I call up a CSR. CSR tells me the account was frozen. I asked how, she says she has no idea and suggests I did it. I've never frozen my account nor would I even know how to without looking it up, so I imagine the CSR during chat screwed that up somehow. She unfroze it, then reset my PW and gave me the temporary to log in. All is fine now, but I must say it was a very irritating hour and a half. I appreciate the platform here from which to vent. Thanks everyone ![]()

You got your account "accidentally" frozen for outsmarting the CSR. Just my $.02 and my conspiracy theory.
I actually believe there may be some truth to that. I did sort of give it to him pretty good after kindly explaining what he was doing wrong multiple times and he kept telling me that I was mistaken (when I knew he was). You can only be nice for so long
In addition to the freeze he also messed with my login credentials. It's just too much of a coincidence to me that I had not one but two unrelated account issues following my chat session.
I made sure to give him a 1-star review and wrote a nice paragraph on why, so at least I have that.
For future reference, chat CSRs can only "see" your eligible spend for Welcome Offers, upgrade offers, spending bonuses, and annual spend thresholds (like Mileage Boost on Delta Platinum/Reserve and Platinum Elite status on Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant) on charges that have appeared on statements. The activity page is the suitable place to calculate this in real-time; the YTD totals are particularly helpful to me. Just be sure to back out any fees such as AFs.
Then the CSR should have seen the charges on the Jan X - Feb X statement and used them in his calculation. He did not.
I had already done the calculations myself, I just wanted to verify that Amex was on the same page with me. I've done this every time I've achieved a SUB and always screenshot the CSR telling me that I met the terms, just sort of as a CYA policy in the event that it doesn't show up. This was the first time I've ever had a CSR tell me that my spend wasn't sufficient when I already knew that it was.
Wow.......

Those frontline customer service reps work hard for low pay. I use to do similar work years and years ago. Sometimes it is the company's fault and not the individual. These mega corporations the majority of time do not provide the tools and resources the employees need to be successful in there roles. Always be respectful and nice to the individual. Treat them how you want to be treated.
Remember, these corporations do not care about them in most cases so the front line employees are doing the best job they can.
I don't think many tools/resources are needed for a CSR to compute spend on an account over a brief 2-3 month period. Any one of us on this forum can take out a calculator and figure that out for any one of our own credit card accounts without any training. I'm fairly confident my 9 year old son could handle that task as well.
My expectations of CSRs is pretty baseline and I don't expect the world. Very simple tasks though shouldn't be an issue. And, if you can't figure something out on your own, get someone that can help.
Like I said great others how you want to be treated. Would you want someone to treat you poorly at your job?
The employees of those companies work hard with little tools or resources. You might have encountered one bad "Apple" but always treat them with respect.
I never said that I wasn't respectful, just that it wasn't a positive CS experience. The only tools/resources needed to answer my question were a computer screen and a calculator, two things I'm very confident any CS has. And while I wouldn't want someone to treat me poorly at my job, I would certainly understand if a customer grew highly agitated and frustrated with me if I wasted 40 minutes of their time due to my negligence and inability to perform a 101 level task that they then showed me how to complete.
