Odd. It seems very hit or miss. I also used to be able to cancel with the automated system in the middle of the night, where now I get the you've reached us outside of business hours, please call back later message.
It sounds to me like they finally figured out that they were being taken advantage of, and are closing the recurring-$1-trial-membership-loop loophole.
What it sounds like to me too. I wonder if it was just an oversight after all that the customer service rep who took care of canceling my trial membership last month didn't offer me the 50% discount to get me to stay. Maybe CCT ought to start offering a one-time-only option to purchase scores and reports like MyFICO does?

I wouldn't say closing it, just making it slightly more difficult to take advantage of $1 trials. The definition of slightly more difficult in this case is approximately 1-2 minutes of time and speaking with a human verses an automated system.
The first thing CCT does still once your trial membership is done though when you log in is spam you with "YOUR ARE ELIGIBLE FOR ANOTHER $1 TRIAL MEMBERSHIP!" so it appears they have no intentions of really trying to tone down the number of $1 trials that someone does.
Slightly off topic here again, but I'd like to add that the last 3 times that I've done a $1 trial membership, immediately following the start of the membership (usually a few hours later) I start getting these "Your password change request" subject line emails from CCT. I started a thread on this the first time I noticed it maybe a month ago. The emails come from e.creditchecktotal.com, so there's a chance that they are scam/bogus emails. They definitely start though right after initiating a new $1 trial, so they do seem legit, as the emails do contain your user name, membership ID# and look nearly identical to other legit emails I've received from CCT such as cancellation confirmations.
Anyone else experiencing something similar here? I'd say I get about 10 of these emails, usually several per day, following a new $1 trial membership.

I've noticed this too. But I found another number (Tip from another board) to call after Midnight to go through the automated system:
Call 877-284-7942, then Option 1 to cancel.
I did try this last night and it worked. I was also offered the 50% off to stay, but I declined.

When calling that number, you get a recording for "Experian Credit Tracker" and it does not mention "Credit Check Total." You were able to cancel a CCT trial membership using that number? I just tried it and the recording said that they were closed for the holiday, so I'll try again tomorrow.
I'd like to add that I'm still getting 5-10 "Password Change Request" emails every time I sign up for a $1 trial. The 5-10 emails come over the course of the next 2 days after I start a new trial, then they stop and don't start again until I do another $1 trial. Very odd.

Yes, it did say "Experian Credit Tracker" (which I don't have), but I was able to cancel my CCT trial membership. I got the Cancellation Confirmation email from CCT about 5 minutes after I finished the call. I prefer the automated system too.
Hi BBS! You are my personal guru on issues related to CCT. Would you please do me a favor at continue to track what's going on with CCT over the next few weeks? Then (if you are willing to) summarize in a new thread, including what CCT is, how a beginner can use it, best method for cancellation, what to expect regarding weird password emails, etc? (It could be a very breif summary.)
I often advise newcomers to use CCT as a method to get their scores for the first time, but since I have never used it myself I am unacquainted with the latest issues. It would be nice if there was a single thread that could be maintained by a guy who's really committed to the forums anyway, and who could update the TOP of the thread once a month with the best advice. Reading through and making sense out of pages of posts can be daunting for anyone, but especially a beginner.
Anyway that is just a thought. IIt doesn't have to be BBS, it could be anybody. Might be a dumb idea, or maybe nobody has the time, which is fine. Just tossing it out there.
CGID,
I'd be glad to take on that task. As you said, I'm fairly involved in the trials as I take one on every other week and of course then cancel one every other week. Out of curiosity, is there a reason why you've never done a $1 trial yourself? I would think with your vested interest in scores and since you do recommend the $1 trials very often that you'd be eager to see the process at least once for yourself just for the hands-on experience.
BPebbles, I have been unable to access an automated system using the number you provided above. During business hours I get the, "this call will be recorded for quality control purposes..." meaning that I'm being transferred to a live body. After hours, I get the "you've reached us after hours, please try calling back during business hours." Basically the same two statements I get when calling the regular 866 CCT number to cancel. I'm going to try again after midnight tonight and see how it goes.
The last several times I've cancelled my CCT trials I've been unable to access the automated system to do so and I've gone through a human instead. I have also cancelled via email several times, which is nice because it's quick and can be done any time of the day. However, I find that CCT does take a couple of days to access/read/process their emails. If you cancel on Day 7 of your trial, for example, they'll likely not see your email until after they charge you for a monthly membership. That has happened twice to me thus far and fortunately both times CS was extremely friendly and prompt in refunding the charge to my CC and cancelling my "real" membership. I think that going forward when I start a $1 trial, I may send an email right after on Day 1 requesting that the trial be cancelled. This way if it takes a few days, I'm still in a good place with respect to the 7 day time line.
Yeah, it was after 2am Pacific Time when I called the 877-284-7942 number the other day. Why was I up that late/early?? I'd just come back from Europe so still suffering from jet lag... Anyway, I hope you are successful in reaching the automated system tonight after Midnight!
