Procedure for Credit Grantor to remove item from my report?

Hi there, I just discovered a bill (by checking my credit report) from 2 years ago that I was never informed of by anyone, and it has been turned over to a collection agency. I called and spoke with the original grantor, NOT the CA, and the owner agreed that he would be ok with it being removed from my report completely. I specifically asked if the debt had been sold, or if I could still deal with them on it, and they said I could still deal with them. However, he doesn't know how to get it removed from my report. I believe it is just sending a signed letter (I offered to enclose a typed one for him to sign, along with an addressed envelope when I mail the payment), but I can't seem to find out for sure the procedure to do this. The only agency reporting this is Equifax, and I tried for 45 minutes to try to talk to a real live person, and no luck. Anyone have any ideas? It would be greatly appreciated!

No, it was for internet service. I thought the final bill had been paid, but it had not, and for some reason it was not forwarded to me.
