Question about hard pulls?

I hear people in the forums say "they pulled Experian" or "they pulled TU" etc.. so if a company only does a hard pull on one bureau, does that mean that is the only score they see?

For example someone on here say they got a card and they pulled EX. Does that mean the card company ONLY saw that person's score from EX?

Re: Question about hard pulls?

Sometimes, but not always. It means EX is the score on which they choose to base their decision, and that is the report on which the inquiry will appear.

However, some lenders may still soft pull your other two reports either at the time of application or at varying points throughout your relationship with them. A soft pull will not be seen by anyone, except you, and will not affect your score.

Re: Question about hard pulls?

That's kinda what I thought but maybe I should reframe my question in a way that explains context.

My best score is nearly 45 points higher than my worst. My EX is around 650 and my TU is around 600. So does that mean I have a significantly better chance of getting approved by a company that only does a hard pull on EX?

Re: Question about hard pulls?

Yes - as long as it's an auto-approval and isn't sent for manual review. And if it is an auto approval, should they decide to soft pull your other reports as part of an account review later, depending on the reason for the 45 point score difference, they could change your initial approval terms.

You can play that game and you may very well be successful - just be aware that things may go south at some point down the road.

Re: Question about hard pulls?

Thanks for the help and you know it's weird because there isn't any negative info on my TU that isn't on my EX. There is an account I am an AU on that only shows on EX and not TU but that's really the only difference. It's kinda hard to believe that is responsible for such a huge difference.

By the way, do u know of any banks that only pull EX. I know PNC does and they happen to be my home bank.

Re: Question about hard pulls?

Amex & TD Bank only pull EX. As well as USAA...of course, with TD you have to be in their footprint and USAA you have to qualify for membership. I'm not sure of others that consistently only pull EX. Chase might, but they also may double pull EX and EQ. Citi & Disco might -- but they may also pull EQ - it's a crap shoot.    There's a post around here somewhere that lists banks and what they pull... you'll have to search for it.

And if the only difference is the AU, then there shouldn't be an issue if a lender were to soft pull post-approval. The AU might be giving you a big age boost. I lost 30 points when my profile was really young and thin and my AU account was accidently removed from TU so...

Re: Question about hard pulls?

Think BBVA pulls EX and Ducks, but check the thread for current "which bank pulls which bureau?" info like @thornback said.
