I recently applied for Citi Double Cash on January 3rd and was declined. When I contacted reconsideration line, I was told that the reason for the denial was because they were waiting on my statement to close on my Custom Cash (Approved December 5th) and that I would be approved if I tried again once it posted. I let my statement post 2 times and reapplied for Double Cash the other day (February 21st) and was denied again. When I contacted reconsideration line this time, they said it was due to having several accounts that were less than 1 year old. Can I have the inquiry removed since I was given bad information as to the reason for my denial? If I had been told that the issue was the age of my accounts, then I wouldn't have reapplied. Not to mention being told I would be approved once the statement posts influenced my decision heavily. My current scores are 738 TU, 731 EQ, 728 EX.

I don't even understand their reasoning as far as I know :You can only apply for one Citi card every eight days You can apply for no more than two Citi cards every 65 days. So their logic makes no sense which doesn't surprise me these reps don't know half the time 🙄
However unfortunately I don't think you can get it removed , you applied again for their card, bad information yes but doubt you will get it removed .
Ya I was surprised both times as well. I have 4 new accounts within the past 6 months but always pay on time and never carry balance. Thought it would make more sense to deny the Custom Cash where the accounts had even less time to age but got approved for that. Ultimately though, they get to decide who they do and do not approve. Just irritated that I was given bad information and now get an extra inquiry on my report because of it.

Sorry they seemed to mislead you.. but none of them are fortune tellers either.
All sort of things could happen between the recon call and a future app date.
I don't recall anything about their website pre-approval being useful or not, assuming they have one and you used such a feature that's a real drag to get confirmed, then have to recon and denied again.
Realistically, 4 new accounts in 6 months is a pretty fast pace.
Profile unchanged since previous app besides the additional inquiry.
I used their pre approval for my first app but didn't for the second.
Ya I am aware it is a bit fast. Just trying to establish some keeper cards so that the account matures by the time I plan on looking for home/auto loans.

You can try filing a CFPB complaint against Citibank requesting that the 2nd inquiry be withdrawn because you applied specifically based upon the information and guidance provided by the CSR on your call of January 3rd. I don't know if your complaint would have any traction, but you wouldn't know unless you tried.
