Reporting for closed BarclayCard > Mercury account with balance?

Hello Everyone,

I have a closed BarclayCard Arrival account with a balance which has been sold to Mercury. This account was closed by the creditor when I was unable to make my payments. I am currently on a long term payment plan with Barclays which has been paid as agreed for the past 12 months.

How will this account show up on my report? What are the implications of having a closed account converted and what should I do to make sure my report looks the best it can (given the circumstances)?

Thanks for your advice!

Closing of a revolving account only means that the consumer is thereafter prevented from making new purchases, and thus increasing the debt.  Once the delinquent balance is paid, then the account will be removed from scoring of its % util of credit limit, but will otherwise continue to be included in your payment history and length of credit scoring categories.

The creditor can, if you have a delinquent balance, continue to add monthly delinquencies until the delinquent debt is erased unless, as part of your repayment agreement, they agreed to discontinue reporting of continued monthly delinquencies.

You are thus only "paid as agreed" with respect to your repayment contract, but your account does not have a monthly pays as agreed status, as it remains delinquent.

The crditor could possibly consent, after you complete repayment of the debt, to re-open the account for use, but that is rarely done.

They usually require that you apply for a new card, and thus go through the complete qualification determination process.

Thanks for your reply!

I’m wondering if the Barclays account will drop from my credit report after it’s transferred to Mercury, or if I’ll end up with 2 (instead of 1) negative accounts on my report. Any ideas?

In some cases, that happens but not always. For example, when Comenity Bank purchased the Children's Place portfolio from Citibank, my Citi Children's Place account still remains on my Transunion report, but it does not update. YMMV, of course. Smiley Wink

Today I tried to pay my monthly payment for Barclay but it won't let me log in online and won't let me pay by phone so will it be called late payment or everything freezes til mercury starts up?

Mercury should mail you their first statement shortly after the transfer (which I think occurred on the 21st or 23rd). The new statement will have a new payment due date on it. It might be marked late if your payment due date with Barclays was before the transfer date. If it was due on or after the transfer date, Mercury did send a letter a while ago that says where to forward payments but I’m going to guess there’s probably no “late” payments until after they issue a statement with a due date.
