If you have not gotten your free CR from all 3 CRA go here https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp
You can get 1 free CR every year!
You don't have to send a letter. You can request each of them through their websites online and see your report and scores immediately. Don't forget, they aren't your true Fico scores for Experian and TransUnion. You can order your reports through MyFico and get your true scores, however you won't be able to see your soft inquiries. If you've been denied credit by someone recently, you can request a free report online for immediate viewing. They won't have scores.
Good Luck!
i should have been clearer...i am requesting them directly from the CRAs via snail mail because i want the paper copy, not the online version. yes, it is because i was recently denied credit.
so...back to my original question. should i send anything other than a copy of my state ID?
I just called equifax yesterday or monday to request mine the had me enter the numerical part of my address and my ss#. I didn't have to send them anything. I was requesting mine because I had been denied credit.. I have a fraud alert and can't view equifax online
So to answer your question... if you write them to request it you have to send ID but if you call you do not.

if you call each credit reporting agency, you can request that a paper copy be sent to you by US mail. it will take about a week, week and a half. You will not need to do anything except answer the questions over the phone regarding your social security number, date of birth and address.
if the address Equifax/Experian/Transunion has for you is wrong in their system, then go ahead and make the request by US mail.

I would inclue SSN and DOB in the request letter and a copy of ID. State why you are requesting(denied credit) and state the creditor that denied you the credit and the date you were notified of the denial(if you know it).
Other than that you should be ok.
I sent out a dispute to each without including my SSN by mistake. EQ did the dispute anyhow, of course TU and EX couldn't do it without my SSN.

I will actually be sending a copy of the denial letter. Thank you for the information!
