Such a weird situation since there are many companies which give discounts to employees and encourage them to shop there.
That's been my experience as well. Both with employers offering on-site dining / vending / company stores, and also online purchases from employers, never heard a peep from any creditors, including AMEX.
Guessing that it's something to do with OP's overall spend or utilization vs CL.
As noted earlier, I worked at a furniture store chain--I was there for 10 years, and bought a 4-bedroom house while working there; I completely furnished the house buying inventory on credit cards. No credit card company ever complained!
The OP has said there's nothing else to it, so they've apparently hit on some new phenomenon no one else has ever heard of!

I used buy some of the stuff we sell at work and resell it myself on the side. Once my credit card company called me and asked about the charges. Amex said that if I am working there I can't use my card there. They said something like it looks like Im getting cash advances via my works merchant account.
Just how much (approximately) spend are we talking about? A few dollars at the employer cafeteria or buying furniture once a year is different than spending a significant amount of your declared income every month in order to resell the merchandise.
It sounds like the amount of spending triggered Amex MS/CA avoidance flag.
What kind of "stuff" are we talking about?
No it was just electronics that I was reselling on the side. Sometimes I grabbed the marketing bill and would get reimbursed. Nothing crazy. Under $10k a month normally. This was up in Canada. Maybe its different up here with this type of stuff?
If your former employer is not a close family relative I wouldn't worry about it even if the card is being used to pay a debt they owe to a neutral 3rd party and you are being reimbursed.
AMEX in particular pays attention to purchases made from a business that you or a close relative owns. That level of relationship is sometimes leveraged to support ethically challenging usage for which they are known to close accounts for if they suspect the practice.
No a relative didnt own it. But how does the credit card company know who owns the companies I shop at?

I just want to revisit this--because I'm still baffled as to why the OP thinks you're not supposed to use credit cards where you work, or formerly worked. Can you please clarify? And, again, I used credit cards at my place of work all the time, both while employed there and after, and I cannot understand why that would be something bad.

Maybe they thought I was a co owner? Or family?

Could you please read my last reply, the one directly before yours, and respond? I'm still competely baffled at why using a credit card where you work(ed) should be something you're not supposed to do.

It appears the OP has read and replied to your post. It may not have been initially apparent because they were either not familiar with or didn't use the "quote" feature. To that end, their post has been edited to illustrate the post had they used the "quote" feature when they replied.
