Could you please read my last reply, the one directly before yours, and respond? I'm still competely baffled at why using a credit card where you work(ed) should be something you're not supposed to do.

It appears the OP has read and replied to your post. It may not have been initially apparent because they were either not familiar with or didn't use the "quote" feature.  To that end, their post has been edited to illustrate the post had they used the "quote" feature when they replied.

Yes, I've noticed that the OP doesn't quote who they're responding to, but since that 'reply' you mentioned didn't answer my question(s), I thought they were just touching on the family/relative issue again. Specifically, they still haven't explained why they think you're not supposed to use your credit card at work or at your former employer. Hence my ongoing bafflement (is that a word?! Smiley Very Happy ).

Yes, I noticed that as well so I just wanted to expand their post (at least to provide clarity), that they had read it and responded.  But, then again, there's still the dilemma for how their bank and/or AmEx flagged things with their previous employer.

And, according to the Googles, bafflement is a word and it does exist in multiple dictionary sources 😁

Bafflement is a state of being utterly confused or bewildered.

Just wondering, I know I shouldnt buy stuff at my current employment shop with my credit cards and I avoid doing that. But can I still buy inventory from my previous employer with my credit card?

I used buy some of the stuff we sell at work and resell it myself on the side. Once my credit card company called me and asked about the charges. Amex said that if I am working there I can't use my card there. They said something like it looks like Im getting cash advances via my works merchant account.

@Tiberius800 - I think there are some unanswered questions on the bolded statement  above.

When you stated "my work's merchant account", how were you purchasing these goods? Were you buying them as an individual or as a business?  If as an individual, were you using a personal card or business card?  Does that previous employer have any associates or employees who manage the books who may be related to you?  Were you ever a co-owner or associated with any business dealings with the previous employer?

When you resell these goods, are you selling them as an individual or as a business? If as a business, do you have a merchant account associated with your business? If so, is that merchant account associated with any family members or relatives who sell these goods as well?  Is this a P2P set up or through eBay, Amazon, etc.?

Excellent questions--and I've bolded in red the other issues I still don't get!

As noted, I've never heard of any rule/law/whatever that you're not supposed to use credit cards to make purchases at your employer, past or present. And I *know* I used Amex a lot at the furniture store where I worked when we bought our first house--and Amex never called me and said I couldn't use my card there. OP, please clarify!

Sorry. I'll explain better and use the quote button.

Amex called me years ago to ask me about charges. The charges where all from my place of work. They told me that since I work there, and make lots of purchases there they are calling to ask me about why I am charging stuff there. I told them I am buying stuff to resell. It was with my personal credit card at the time. They told me that sometimes its a conflict because people can do cash advances for themselfs through their employers merchant account. Nobody owns it in my family or anything close. Freaked me out that they called me to ask so I stopped using them. I assumed its because I listed them as my employer and all the charges where from them too on my card. At the time I was just reselling them locally and on amazon. I later setup a business. There are no ties between my business and theirs. Other than me working there.

I don't understand even if there was ownership or a relative, how they could possibly know who I am related to? Are they pulling business records from the government?

Okay, this helps a lot. Thanks.

Amex must have suspected something fraudulent. As I've said, I used my credit cards a LOT while working, and later, at a high-end furniture store, including Amex. No one ever contacted me or questioned my use. Your OP indicated that you're aware you're not supposed to use credit cards where you work--this is simply not true! If that was true, I'd be in jail (or whatever the penalty is).

Maybe the way your transactions were coded raised some kind of red flags. I'm not up on stuff like that so I'll defer to someone who is. In my case, my transactions were coded as exactly what they were: purchases. No red flags.

And the family/relative thing: I'm guessing that if you're related to a company's owner, or if you are the owner, there are probably ways of laundering money that I not only don't know about, but don't want to know about. Maybe that's why they asked.

Re: Shopping at previous employer?

I'm more suprised that the OP employer is "ok" with him/her reselling "less than $10k a month" of goods on the side, than that AMEX cares.
