Skimmers and Manual Entry?

Re: Skimmers and Manual Entry?

So sorry to hear this. Back in 2014 I had someone at a Food Cart steal my info for my debit card and then use it for what I assume was all of their online Christmas shopping later on. I took a huge hit on that, it was terrible. I'd say there's a decent chance a lower level employee just stole the information and used it.

I wish you the best of luck in straightening the situation out. Glad to hear it was a credit card so there's a good chunk of protection afforded to you.

So what happens if it turns out to be a clerk?  Also, is the company obligated to tell me the facts?

Re: Skimmers and Manual Entry?

If it turns out to be theft/fraud by an employee, then as the victim of that crime you will be informed. You may or may not get the name of the employee but you’ll be told that yes, it was an employee. What happens after that is hard to say. Sometimes it’s up to you whether to press charges, other times the law spells it out and the DA will file automatically.

Corporate I think is a slim maybe, but at store manager level a definite possibility. Laura and I discussed this incident yesterday, and when she spoke with the store they said they couldn’t find the transactions. I don’t buy that one bit. Software for a business would be designed at corporate directive to log everything, likely to the level of a keystroke logger, that occurs on the terminal, and I’d be very surprised that two fraudulent transactions would be the ones “lost in the system” while others are right there...

Corporate is always going to cover up anything that could get them sued.

Thankfully the gas pumps near my house all allow Samsung Pay as where I live (the metro area in general) has a kinda-big problem with skimmers. While I'm relatively new to using Samsung Pay, it seems like a nice level of extra security (with a different digital CC number) to use when it's available.

Police are involved.  So far Discover has found 53 transactions that are fraud.  The are just now showing up on my restricted acct.

Re: Skimmers and Manual Entry?

After much talk it may not be fraud, it looks like these are old charges being rerun at HQ.  Accidently inputting paid charges they thought they did not get paid for, but they did.  It also was not my charge, it was ds's from early July, showing no name but I found the match.  HQ should have informed customers and managers.  So a lot of wasted time and worry but glad to know last weeks craziness had nothing to do with this mess.

Edit to add: my friend also got the calls yesterday too.  She was at that station the day before. So it does sound glitchy since it's not just me.

Since this involves the fraud reporting process moving to General Credit for additional exposure.

Thanks Unc!

Update:  I'm thrilled to say the charges, some but not all are legit.  The duplicates that are truely duplicates will/are being credited.  Thanks to the Discover Stmt. I was able to find what was going on with my acct.

Edit to add:  CapOne I can't really tell but I think they have credited us for one that is legit. It's not as easy to tell.  They're going back and fourth.
