Slightly Freaking Out - Received Call Regarding Debt That's Not Mine

*UPDATE*

Ok so a huge thank you to those who responded! Apparently, this is a scam that's been happening with Advance America. I'm just happy that I didn't give the guy any personal information. All he had was my name and that's it. This is the number they called me from in case anyone else receives the same call:  (818) 446-2479. I'm sure they'll use different phone numbers, but who knows? Also, I called the company directly and they have no record of me opening an account with them, which tells me the people who called were most likely scam arses. Screw people who think it's ok to do this kind of crap.

I just knew something like this was going to happen. I've been doing so well managing and building my credit this past year. I went from a 580 to 741 and I'm scared of what's going to happen next.

So today I get a call from a random number saying "This is a call for (my name). If you are (my name) please press 1." So I do and am put on hold for like 15 minutes. I finally get someone on the phone and he goes through the spiel of this being an attempt to collect a debt and blah blah blah. I ask him what the heck is this for and he said it was for a payday loan I got back in 2016. I sure as heII did NOT aquire a payday loan in 2016!!! Trust me, I learned my lesson long ago after getting them back in my early 20's.

At first, I thought he was calling regarding the payday loan I got back in like 2013, which I had already taken care of and was removed from my reports last year. I'll admit, I was a bit angry on the phone and wasn't very nice to the guy because I thought they were still calling me about that old payday loan, but he said the debt was from Advance America. I told him this honestly wasn't me and he said it would be looked into further. He ended up hanging up on me, so I wasn't able to get much information other than that.

What's weird is that I received a call from this same company yesterday asking for someone named Meghan. My name isn't Meghan, but I find it weird that the same company would call me.

So what would be my next step here? Should I call Advance America and find out if I had an account with them and ask them to send me proof? Should I wait until they call me back? I don't know what to do guys, but I DO know that this 100% was not me who took out that loan. I know if it shows up on my reports I can file a police report for identity theft and get it removed that way, but I'd like to try and get ahead of this one. I'm kicking myself in the pants for being so angry on the phone and not requesting more information... I also don't remember the name of the company they were calling from, but I just recognized it from yesterday when they said it initially.

Also, does anyone know how to check who did SP on my Experian report? I can't seem to find it anywhere, or is that something only available on the annual reports?

I think I've found the sacred map that may lead me to this garden everyone keeps talking about.

Re: Slightly Freaking Out - Received Call Regarding Debt That's Not Mine

Before you completely freak out...  read this (udated as recently as April 2019) -

https://dfi.wa.gov/consumer/alerts/cash-advance-america-possible-collection-and-advance-fee-loan-sca...

My friend received a call from a collection agency about them too...a few weeks ago.  I made her google the phone number of the collection agency because there are so many scams and, of course, the one that called her was on the list noted on the page I linked.  And the so-called collection agency was "Pacifica Law Group" -- one of the scam names listed.

So... try to find out who called you - and make sure it's not a scam.  If whoever is calling you is not listed at that link, then contact Advance America directly first to see if they actually have a defaulted account for you from 2016 before making any moves as far as reporting fraud.

Boo to treacherous pitfalls when you're doing everything right.

It's been a while, but I believe you can see all softpulls when you pull freecreditreport.com/annualcreditreport.com

Someone correct me if I'm mistaken.

Re: Slightly Freaking Out - Received Call Regarding Debt That's Not Mine

This is a typical pay day loan scam.  I can guarantee that there's nothing on your credit report and they will never take you to court.  I get at least 5 of these calls a month though as they call, I just blocked them.  Block them and move on.  It's all a scam.

Re: Slightly Freaking Out - Received Call Regarding Debt That's Not Mine

@thornback - Thank you so much for this! I did actually end up calling Advance America and the guy said he had no record of me having an account at any time. I asked if he was sure as they were claiming this was from 2016 and he said yes, he's absolutely sure. He also mentioned that these types of scams have been happening so it's certainly put my mind at ease. I'm going to check out the link you provided and see if they're on there. If I see the name, I know I'll recognize it.

@hpotterfan77 - There is nothing on my reports and I've since put a lock on all of them. I should know better than to fall for this crap, but this is exactly how my life goes and something stupid always happens when I finally start doing well. Now I don't feel so bad for yelling at that guy. Smiley Very Happy

I've been getting an increasingly wild number of calls in the past two months- from 0 to almost daily. They typically have started out by saying they are "suchity such calling on a recorded line, can you hear me okay?" My researching suggests that they do this to get a recording of your voice saying "yes".  Be careful answering your phone, unfortunately scammers are becoming more slippery than ever. I mean, with all that talent, just get a great job, right?

Is that kind of call typical with scammers? I got one earlier in the day yesterday, but it went to voicemail and just recorded it saying, "If this is (my name), please press 1." and then it hung up. If I receive any of these calls in the future, I'm going to immediately block.

Ok that's terrifying. Yeah, I don't understand why people would choose this line of work. There's plenty of legit sales jobs out there where you can make great money!

They found a way to leave a voice mail thru the back door and never call your actual number. I filed a complaint with Verizon and its stopped. On my Google Pixel if enough people block and report as spam. When they do call it already has the spam warning icon. Then I block it again to help fight these morons.
