Social Security number change

As a victim of identity theft I was advise that I could request that the SSA change my SS number. Has anyone ever encountered an individual whom has done this and did it help with their identity theft issues or did it make their life/situation more complicated?

Re: Social Security number change

We have a member here who had to do this to escape an abusive ex, and her name just won't come to me. As I recall, it wasn't all that helpful, because either the new number showed up on reports pulled under the old, or vice versa. As a shield, it seemed pretty porous.

Try doing a search here under SSN change or something similar. Seems like it was a bit before Christmas?

If you search the term "social security", then you'll find what you are looking for and what HTSU is talking about.

I work for SSA. An issue of a new number happens in very rare cases. Don't expect the agency to be helpful, especially in cases of identity theft.

Thanks for giving us the inside scoop.  I suspected that they didn't hand out new SSNs too freely unless you were in the Witness Protection Program ... Smiley Surprised

Re: Social Security number change

As hauling said.....we have a member that had her SS changed because of abusive husband....she had a lot of trouble with her new SS showing on old CC and loans....her hubby got her new address from creditors.................I do not think that IRS will change just for ID theft.....They have the CRAs set up to put fraud alerts for this......I think that it would be very hard to get IRS to give a new SS#......just think how busy they would be doing this.Everyone would be doing it.

Re: Social Security number change

SSA has already offered me the ability to change my number since it was compromised.

My previous ex-roommate had used my SS number to commit various acts of identity theft, used it to secure credit, and used to when commiting various crimes.

The biggest mistake he made was to provide arresting officers MY SS number when being arrested for commiting crimes that crossed state lines.
