Hello all. I have a question in regards to some identify theft that heppened over 7 years ago...
When i first moved to Minnesota, there was a company i was paying an auto loan over the phone to that stole my information. I went through 6 different identity theft scenarios where the bank filed fraud stuff and closed accounts made new accounts etc.
I recently received another phone call that referenced these.
I was called by a mitigation (debt collection fools) company reporting that they are not pursuing the debt anymore, but are going after the fraudulant check charges.
I notified the person that i have a case number from about a year ago that reflected that there was fraud, and a police sgt actually did research and has it all documented in that case (from 1 year ago, not from 7 years ago when the actual issue happened)....
I offered to provide that police number and he declined stating that they will remove our contact information from their call center...
I asked him how do i stop people from calling me for this every couple of months and i have to go through the same schpeel of telling them about the identity theft and police report, just for them to sell the debt again....
So my question for you all is exactly that, how do i get this crap to stop... i have great credit, i have no need for loans or credit as it stands, but i am tireed of them calling everyone under the sun even remotely related to me trying to get ahold of me.....
Change your phone number? If it's a landline the number is publicly available, most cell numbers aren't.
The debt collection fools will keep trying, they try for anything that might result in getting someone to cough up some cash their way, even if the debt isn't valid. A couple years ago I had a debt collector call me claiming the had bought the 2nd mortgage on my property that the previous owner had taken out and demanded I make payment arrangements or they would foreclose. It was so ridiculous as I bought the property from the 1st mortgage holder who had foreclosed, which would have wiped out any 2nd mortgage. Plus I had title insurance guaranteeing their was no lien on the property. But Instead of bothering to explain that I just told them "Great, I'll look forward to seeing you in court" and hung up. I had been thinking of getting rid of the landline and just go with cell, so I did. Never heard from them again.
It is a cell phone.... gosh i really wish the government knew how the heck to stop this.... This guy was from the US though. no accent or anything.
Call a consumer protection attorney. You may be able to sue them for harassment if you've already told them it wasn't valid and they refuse to accept your proof.

Very good. My dw has the same name. similar birthdate and close by address as well as similar line of work as a deadbeat. Strange?
She explains 1 time it is a different person and puts it in writing. If they follow up and try to call dw again she sicks the the consumer attorney on them. She usually collects between $5K and $1oK a year from these people. It has become a hobby for her and extra "pocket money" More than once they did not believe DW and her attorney. Once one to sue DW when it was all said and done DW had a hefty check, her attorney did also and the attorney for the other side was trying to keep his law license. In the end he got it suspended.
