So, I'm thinking of joining a Credit Union. I don't know much about them, but I like the idea of a better checking option. I love Chase (I may keep them too), but I remember when I was unemployed for 6 months it was so annoying to have to pay for my checking account since I wasn't using my direct deposit.
there's also a 5.99% balance transfer Visa that sounds like a great deal too.

Many on the forum are members of credit unions. I belong to three and have credit cards with two. I plan on joining at least one more. Do you have any particular credit union in mind?
I was thinking of Nordstrom Credit Union since I'm currently an employee.
Why not talk to your co-workers to see if any are members? Ask about their experiences.
I belonged to a credit union for 27 years during my working days. I now belong to NFCU so you can see I am a big fan of CUs in general. With NFCU I have a savings account, checking, direct deposit, a CC, and a loan.

Not sure what you're looking for. Credit unions aren't all identical just as banks aren't all identical. If you find one with produicts that suit you then join. I don't currently use a CU for deposit accounts. I'm with USAA for that. However, I do use a credit union for a card that it offers.

Do you work/live in Washington State? If so, BECU hands down.
I'm a member of 5, in the process of joining the sixth. I have credit cards for four of them, only was shot down by one of them. Joined the first credit union last year and I've liked it so far. I dumped Chase and don't regret it.
I love my credit union. I have no fees associated with my accounts. I don't have direct deposit and my accounts are free. With banks they charge you a excessive fee for not having direct deposit. They were the first to give me a credit card when I was fresh out of bk. They are the best hands down.
I had a CU buy switched to Discover checking and savings account this year. Way better rates than any bank around the central valley. 0.95% savings and i get $0.10 every time i use my debit card. Since may I've earned $26 just for using paying with my debit card. How many other banks pay you cash for using your debit card? Not many. Look into discover if you have one of their credit cards as i think it's only open to current members.
