Time Limit for Items report on Credit Report

Does anyone know when an item such as a student loan is supposed to drop from a credit report? I know its 7 years, but is it 7 years from when account was opened, account was closed, or last day of activity on account?

If it's a Federal Student Loan, there is no SOL.
