I was opening a phone line with T-Mobile the other day and was denied credit. In the letter they sent me, the reason for denial was that they couldn't verify my identity. I see the hard pull on my Transunion file though....
Is this legitimate reason to contest the hard pull as they did not even use the information present in my credit file to make a credit decision?
You will probably not have any luck disputing the legality of the pull as you gave them both the information and permission. The permission is not contingent on them approving or even using the information as a basis for approval. And requests for credit information (pulls) cannot be disputed through the bureau unless you are alleging that they did not have permissible purpose. In this case since you initiated the process they did.
What i would do is call T-Mobile and attempt to determine what their complaint or issue with your identity is. It could be as simple as the address or name variation that you provided did not show up on the credit report.
I have a thin file since the only TLs on my TU are two credit cards opened 8 months ago. It was a basic phone line so T-Mobile only required me to pay a $30 deposit. Just a bit bummed about a hard pull which didn't "do anything".
