@pizza1 wrote:so, Ive dropped my iphone several times (ive got protector case and screen on it), and nothing has ever happened to it. Well, it slipped off my bathroom counter onto my tile floor face down and &*&*^$^&&*^......screen cracked like a spider web. I can still use it though, LOL...but, went to Verizon today to check on my upgrade eligabilty and Im not able to upgrade with a discount till July 3rd...ugh!!
In the meantime...she offers me the "Edge" program to wear I can upgrade early, and pay over time my new phone...I declined naturally..... and then this is where it gets ugly....
me: They do a HP for that Edge program, and I dont want another one right now.
rep: Oh, its ok!! a HP doesnt affect your credit at all!!
me: (staring at her with a deer in the headlight look...and just blinking)
me: um, actually....a HP DOES affect your credit, and actually stays on your report for 2 yrs.
her: Its not a big deal...really, I know all about this ...I can get you signed up right now.
me: (staring in disbelief that Im actually having this conversation....."blinking"....thinking happy thoughts....staring and blinking)
her: I can tell youre thinking about this and want to do it
me: no, Im actually Im wondering where you get your info from...like, who trains you on credit, and for the record...you have to tell the customer that you are going to pull a credit report before doing it...
(this is where the manager steps in after overhearing the conversation of his new little gungho trainee)
Me: ( Immediately shoots him down)...tell them Ill wait, I can still use the phone, but if it see that they ran my credit on my reports, Ill have both of their jobs, and their high pressure sales and credit ignorance doesnt work with me.
I left in complete disbelief, and frustration, LOL...why must I have these conversations...(only Creditaddict will feel my pain)
And here I was hoping you would take Verizon's offer and then hoping you would tell us how you looked in the Edge program.
I have 12 lines of service with Verizon (personal - not business) and I have never, ever had a hard pull from Verizon. Ever. I've had them for about 10 years.

Got info from managers and it states it on their site.
Just put the insurance on it, then pay $150 for a new phone.
Verizon has done an HP for every single service I've ever aquired from them. This is when I've paid for the device (like the jetpack) in full, and have NEVER signed a 2 year agreement. Everything paid up front, month to month, and still credit checked.
Makes no difference new vs existing customer as I understand it.
1) Home Internet
2) Jetpack Wireless
3) Business Internet.
Verizon is actually the majority of my inquiries in the past year on my credit reports, and I find their practices to be more than a little irritating. That said FIOS is as good as it possibly gets for me in my area so it's not like I'm going anywhere over it... but signing up for additional VZ services past where I'm at now, simply unlikely.
It might be worth it for you to see what it would cost to replace the front screen. I think my local Apple store wanted $30 for the back glass (I did it myself for $3), but I have no idea on the pricing of the front glass.
Moral of the story....
try your best to NOT damage your phone.

Interesting. I have been able to charge to my account up to $500 per line (or somewhere around that number) multiple times. Renewed contracts, and bought phones outright and can not name a single time a hard pull was done. This does not count the single time they pulled my credit 10 odd years ago when I initiated service with them. Im there with ya, if a hard pull were needed, Id bail and just throw it on a card (or charge to my account).
In the initial post, what shut them down from ability to pull a credit report was not the fact that the consumer did not provide express authorization, it was the fact that the consumer did not initite the request for the service.
The purpose of FCRA 604 is to define circumstances where a party is authorized to recieve your credit report without need for your express authori\ation.
Otherwise, credit and business transactions would come to a crawl.
Consumer-inititiated requests for creidt always provide permissible purpose.
Similarly, consumer-inititated busness transactions that dont involve extension of credit can also proivde permissible purpose to pull the consumer's credit report without their express authorization if the business transaction involves a legitimate business purpose to review a consumer's credit. Transactions such as requests for utilities, phones, apartment rental, etc., are included, as the consumer has the possibility of owing the business $$ that may not be collected.
Thus, I would not assume that a biness will not or cannot pull your credit report unless you downt authorize them to do so.
If they have a legitimate business purpose, they can do so without notifying you. They will oftern notify you as a courtesy or as a good business practice, but there is no statutory requirement that they do so.
