Re: Using Credit Cards for EVERYTHING?

I use a CC for everything unless it costs extra ie. my gas & electric charge a convenience fee for paying with CC so I have them auto-draft from my checking. I figure it's money I have to spend anyway so I might as well get cash back for it by using a rewards card.

Plus, there are consumer protections on CCs that cash/debit won't give you like travel insurance, extended warranty, price match, etc. Also if you have to dispute a fraudulent charge on a CC you dispute it before you actually pay for it, with a debit card your money is already gone from your account, you have to fight to get it back.

In addition, using a card of any kind gives you an easy way to track your spending because you can use online banking or download transactions into a spreadsheet or quicken or something. Some people (cough, Dave Ramsey, cough) claim you spend more with cards than you do with cash because you feel the cash leaving you. For me I definitely feel it leaving when I check the card online and see the amount owed increase.

The only reason I use cash is for the babysitter, but my wife usually is the one to stop by the ATM. I almost never have cash in my wallet anymore, but sometimes I do carry a 10 or 20 for the rare occasion I stop somewhere that doesn't take a card.

Unfairly / inaccurately) caused my FICO score to DROP significantly.    Can't they fix the FICO calculation so that they recognize that I pay off my credit card every month and recognize that in fact I am an excellent credit risk?????

Welcome!

I think the problem lies with how the CC reports to your credit report as opposed to FICO. FICO (or lenders as far as that goes) has no way of knowing if the card is paid in full each month because the 3 credit reporting agencies don't report that. There is a solution, though. Credit card companies generally report one time per month by reporting the balance you had on your statement date and will report that balance within a day or so of that statement date. The key to get the credit reporting agencies to report $0 is to pay off the card immediately prior to your CC's statement date. Once the payment clears and the statement prints with $0, then the credit reporting agencies will report that.

Re: Using Credit Cards for EVERYTHING?

I put everything that I can put on a credit card on a credit card (to get the points).  Some utilities don't accept credit cards, so I pay those via BillPay from my bank.  I never use a debit card as the liability is too high.  I pay my credit card company several times a month so the balance is never very high.

Exactly, they don't know if you are going to PIF or not.  I've been working on asking for limit increases to solve this problem.  So now even though I let balances report, they are a small percentage of my credit limit and shouldn't affect my score much.

To answer the original question, I pay as much as I can on CCs.  1.25% cashback on everything is nice.  Most of my utilities don't accept them though without an extra fee, so I use direct withdrawal or checks.  I never use debit cards except at ATMs.

It is my goal to use a CC for everything I can. Since right now I have one card with a small limit ($500) I still have to pay my rent with a debit card and use my banks bill pay for the cable and electric bill.

In a perfect world once my credit score improves a little more and I can get a prime card I am putting everything I can on the card to maximize rewards. Comcast is my cable provider and I am pretty sure I can pay with a credit card, I do know my electric company charges a 2.95 convienience charge for credit card payments so that negates any rewards so I would just continue using bill payment for that. However if it is possible to set up automatic electric bill payments to my CC then I would consider the convienience charge worth it to have it hit my card automatically.

That is one thing, I will never use a credit card if I am charged extra to do so. I have been watching my gas station closely and so far I am only being charged the price on the sign for my gas, nothing extra. I don't know anything about a cash discount though but if the cash discount is bigger than the rewards, then it is worth it.

I hadly carry cash around. Only sometimes for a few local businesses I know of that are cash only.

Once I have a prime card with a good limit by debit card becomes just a glorified ATM card.

Comcast does accept credit cards. Thats how I pay my bill.

+1

I write one check for rent, and do a monthly electronic debit for electic -- everything else goes on a CC (except for taxes, since they charge a convenience fee).

Re: Using Credit Cards for EVERYTHING?

I quit debit and cash a few months a go and now everything I purchase goes on a credit card, in fact the only transactions which get withdrawn from my bank account are credit card payments, mortgage and a few utilities who insist on charging a convienience fee for using a third party credit payments website so I do billpay.

Personally I`d rather have the money in the bank earning interest and float my expenses and then PIF rather than be at the mercy of a bank who will try their best to overdraw your account or apply outragous fees to your account for a single instance when your checking may be $1.25 short.

If your going to do the spend you may as well also be rewarded for it, so all my purchases are made to specfic products to reap rewards, transaction by transaction your not getting that much back but over time, your rewards balances grow.

Cash doesn't give cash back. Smiley Happy

I spent a about a thousand this past month on my NFCU card. 6-10% cash back at some stores. Well worth it. It's enough to cover a utility or two. Paid in full of course.
