I have been an att customer for like 10 years. I have a family plan and currently have 7 devices on this plan. 3 are iPads. I bought my wife an iPad Mini for Christmas and I am configuring it now so that it will work when she opens it. I called ATT to add the device to my family plan. They said they had to run a credit check. I validated that they were not going to pull a hard pull on my credit. I told her I just added a new iPad about a month ago and didn't have to do all that. Anyway, she came back on and told me I had to give them a deposit to add this device. I calmly told them they something has to be wrong, I have added several devices in the last 3 years to my family plan, and was never required to pay any deposit. I have never been late on a payment, and they are making 400 a month on me, you would think that they would love to have another device added. How am I a risk with my past history? So I asked for a supervisor, the supervisor wouldn't even get on the line and just told her to tell me she couldn't help... I am so pissed off, it isn't like I can't afford the 150 deposit, by why should I? I a not some uncredit worthy individual with a history of missing payments... They never asked me for a deposit in the past, why the hell now! I am trying to find a email address of someone to complain to. I really am considering moving all my devices, but then I would have to purchase all new devices too I think. I have like 4 iphones and 4 ipads on this account... That is a big expense to switch.
They did the same to me.
I had a family plan and didn't have to pay deposits on any of those. But, when all of those were used (5), I did have to pay a deposit on any subsequent devices.
The way they explained it to me was anything above what you were initially approved for would require another account (not on the family plan) and require a deposit.
It makes sense in a weird kind of way I suppose.
In the end, my bill was so high I cancelled everything and just went with Straight Talk. Saved over $400 a month.
I work for AT&T and I am not speaking on behalf of the company but adding another line is like asking for a CLI. Every bank has a maximum exposure they are willing to give out, even to great customers. I'm sorry about your trouble.
