Weird "Dark Web" message from Cap1!!??

So, With my Venture card, I also have access to their Credit Wise monitor, or whatever its called from Cap1, and I get to log in Weekly to see my "report" and score (not fico).  Anyways, yesterday, I get an alert from them saying they found my email addess on the Dark Web and to log in to view. Im like what? I didnt sign up for any "Dark Web" montioring with anyone.

So I log in, and view alerts, and I had two, one was a new acct reporting that I knew about, and the other was that my email adress was discovered in a Linkedin data breach. I remember being on Linkedin years ago like 9-10 yrs ago, and Im not on there anymore. I searched under current email address, and phone number and they couldnt find me anywhere, and told me "join". I searched for name, and I wasnt found either.

Im not too worried about it,  but I thought it was weird that Cap1 is searching for me without my knowledge or permission on the "Dark Web". I read the T&C on Cap1's Creditwise thing, and no where did it say that youre also signing up for Dark Web monitoring. I called in to CS, and of course they are clueless and didnt know what I was even talking about.

For good measure though, I changed my password on current email address. Just thought Id mention it to see if anyone else had this bizarre experience with Cap1's creditwise.

I think when I was checking my CW details the other day I accidently signed up for this "searching" service as you describe. It's really very easy to accidentally do so. I didn't see the harm so i didn't set about un-joining.

I now look forward to them finding me something as equally interesting.

I got the same thing from Credit Wise. Mine was a LinkedIn data breech from 2016. Credit Karma is also alerting as well. I got one from Credit Karma today. Both mine tell me to change the password. Personally, I'm not really concerned.

Many large companies have started doing this - not just with email addresses, but also with PASSWORDS.  If you use a password that was disclosed in a publically-known breach (or a private one available to the company), you may be asked to change it...

This is less traditional "identity protection", and more just account security for the companies themselves.

There's a great free service (with a terrible name...) run by Troy Hunt to check which data breaches your email address has been included in: https://haveibeenpwned.com (yes, yes, it's an odd name for the site. But Troy is as legitimate as they come.)

Same outcome as others have mentioned. No harm in it going the "extra mile" by searching potential hacks, right? 😁 IIRC, this was part of the initial option when signing up for CW.

Re: Weird "Dark Web" message from Cap1!!??

Both CW and incidently myFICO have found old information from years old breaches (Yahoo Mail is my main one that keeps popping up).

As been stated think majority of monitoring services have something like this now... got to keep adding features in an arms race for your dollars!
