What if identity was to be stolen???

If somehting went wrong and your identity was stolen. And you had to change ssn what would happen to your curent cards and info.?? How would the credit card banks get notified of ssn change? Hopefully that doesnt ever happen with my sister and I Smiley Sad

Re: What if identity was to be stolen???

You'd notify your creditors of the SSN change.

It's really unnecessary to change your SSN though. Adding FAs will mostly/completely eliminate any future threats and a police report would get rid of any pre-FA issues and reporting.

If you go to the SSA site you can find information about that subject.  It generally isn't a good idea and your other SSN will always be connected to your new one.

Re: What if identity was to be stolen???

If your identity is used to obtain new credit or make transactions on your existing credit, the FCRA provides powerful means to immediately get any credit reporting pertaining to alleged idenity theft information removed from your credit report, and to require the creditor to provide all business records in their possession related to the allged identity theft transactions.  See FCRA 605B and 609(e).

You can also place fraud alerts in your file, requiring personal contact with you, and thus addressing potential for identity theft that has not yet occured.

Changing SSN has far-reaching implications that I would be hesitant to initiate except in the most extreme of situations.

Re: What if identity was to be stolen???

Thanks guys! For now ill be monitoring my sisters and my own credit reports to see if any unusal activity is spotted and if so you can always dispute it since its an error or identity fraud.

But only dispute future unknown accts with a police report, otherwise they'll very likely just verify it.
