What products to order

I'm not sure which of all the credit products I should order to get started on bringing up my score.

I got my free credit report from Equifax* (10 negative, 5 positive, 589 score, ugh) and I know I should get the reports from the CRAs, but what about monitoring? Is that something I should start off with or wait on? Do I tackle each report one at a time or compare and contrast and do it all at the same time?

I've thought about employing one of the credit repair agencies, but I'm guessing I can do some of this on my own (or with a mentor, hint, hint). At 36 years old, I don't want to feel insecure about my credit and finances any more.

 *Updated to correct reporting agency.

AmEx Platinum - AmEx BCP - Chase Freedom - NFCU Platinum - Chase Amazon Prime - Citi Costco - Citi Best Buy

Hello, and welcome to the FICO Forums.

I recommend that you start off by reading llecs's Credit Monitoring Services Guide, a comprehensive review of the different services available.  This list is being continually updated, but you should still verify the details of any service you choose to order.

With regard to improving your credit, you've come to the right place.  The Rebuilding Your Credit board is a terrific place to get advice; if you post some specific details about your credit issues, someone will likely respond.  I wouldn't recommend seeking out a single mentor, as it is unlikely that you'd find a single individual who has had personal experience with a broad variety of credit problems.  And I certainly would not recommend the use of a credit repair company.  They charge excessive amounts of money for things you could do on your own, often engage in unethical credit repair tactics, do not always deliver on their promises, and may not produce long-lasting results.

Good luck!
