What's the difference?

Why would you rather DV a CA than just go to the CRA and dispute? Do the CRA's have different criteria for valediation than if I send a letter to the CA?

If you go to the CRA and dispute, the CA will just verify with the CRA.

Yes, the CRAs have MUCH different criteria for resolving your dispute than you have for getting DV. When the CRA "investigates" your dispute, they basically go to the CA and say, "Is this really the person whose collection you wanted to report?" and the CA says, "Yep, that's her," and the CRA says, "OK, thanks. We thought so." Then the CRA sends you a letter saying your dispute was investigated and the account stands as reported.

When you DV the CA, however, they are required by law to provide you with validation of the debt. If you DV within the first 30 days, they are even required to cease collection activities until they validate. They have no such requirement to provide any of that type of validation to a CRA during a dispute.

thanks for all of your insight. I'm going to try to DV ones I've already paid. Do you know of a letter out there for that? I can't imagine they'd go through all of the trouble of digging up that info if they already have their money. Then I can insist that they remove it right? It is nothing to them now, since they have nothing at stake.

If they're paid and you DV them, that will not stop them from reporting, even if they don't validate. They are only required to cease collection activities (including reporting) if you DV them within the first 30 days of receiving notice of the account.
