Where to begin?

Hi everyone...  Been lurking around here and reading lots of good stuff.  Looks like I am going to have to start sending some PFD's for sure, but I do not know quite yet.

My score is below 500 currently (EQ is 466, EXP is 477, dont have TU at the moment)...

I have some SL's with the DoE that looks like I need to rehab.  On top of that, I have a number of collections as well as charge offs for the same amounts.  Obviously, the charge offs are from the actual banks my cards were through and the collections are the accounts on file with the CA's.  My question is, should I be working with the CA's via PFD letters, and then once paid, send GW's to the original creditors?  Just want to make sure I'm going about this the right way.  I know this will take time to repair but I'm willing to do the work and pay my debts, just want to move forward in the most efficient manner possible.

A couple more questions... most of these collections are fairly recent (4-5 months or so)...  Should I even consider repaying the original creditor directly?  If CA's refuse to delete accounts but show them as paid, how much does this help my score vs getting a complete deletion?

Thanks in advance to everyone with all the great advice and knowledge I've come across so far!

Re: Where to begin?

Right...if the CA reports a balance and the OC reports $0 (due to selling the debt to the CA), then send the CA a PFD. If they agree in writing, then pay it and they'll delete. Then send a GW to the OC and maybe mention in it that the debt had been paid.

I wouldn't pay the OC directly because they'll probably have to forward the payment to the CA and the CA will update to $0. You wouldn't want that. A $0 balance CA is equally as bad as one with a $10,000 balance, per FICO. FICO ignores CAs' balances.
