Why is there a big difference between my TU and Equifax score?

I just pulled my scores from myfico.com today 4/29/09, and my scores are a little bit apart. My Trans Union score is 647, which is way better than when it was at 580 about 10 months ago. My Equifax score is 623. This is the first time I've ever pulled my FICO score from Equifax.

So 647 from TU and 623 from Equifax. Do they have different formulas on figuring out your FICO score and shouldn't the scores be closer? I also noticed that Equifax did not have one of my credit card balances correct and Trans Union did. Who should I contact about this?

Thanks for all your help!

Are both Trans Union and Equifax reporting the account in the same month?  If so you can dispute this depends how big a difference it is if it will change the score. Are there any other differences such as one is reporting the credit limit and the other reporting the high balance. Any accounts reported by only one of the two credit bureaus? The scores are not that far apart.

Re: Why is there a big difference between my TU and Equifax score?

Each FICO score (EQ, TU, and the mysterious and unseen EX) is created by a unique scoring formula commissioned by each CRA. Each formula weights things in different ways --EQ hits hard for lates, etc etc.

Also, each bureau updates on its own sweet time. EX usually updates within 24 hours of getting the info from lenders. EQ and TU dawdle along, taking turns at which will be slower, generally updating somewhere around 4-7 days after being sent the info by the lenders. So be sure to check balances on all your accounts to see if they match.

Even when all three of my reports are fully updated and matching, my EQ is generally 30 points lower than TU and EX. That's because of two things: EQ penalizes much more for lates, and I have one 90-day plus a handful of 30's scattered around, and my EQ history is a little bit shorter --19 years instead of 20 or 21 on the other two. These are old, closed accounts from back in the day when many lenders only reported to one bureau.
