credit card debt vs. mortgage

I am having a tough time keeping up with all my bills. Lately there has not been enough income to cover it all. Which is a better strategy, paying the mortgage or paying down credit card bills? I understand that a person can only get help from the govt. if their mortgage is past due. I have been paying it and neglecting credit card bills but now my thinking is to lower my credit card bills, be late on my mortgage and try to get help from my mortgage company such as a lower rate or whatever the govt. can do to help. Please advise.

Hello Jeweler, and welcome to the forums. Please read Credit Scoring 101, if you haven't already.

While neither option that you face is optimal, you can't live in your credit cards. Why not continue paying your mortgage and look into a DMP for your CCs. You don't want to throw up your hands and say forget it.
