disputing with CB

I recently received a letter (last week) from a collection agency for the amount of $54.  I knew I paid that bill a long time ago to the creditor (book club) by couldn't prove it.  I pulled my 3 credit reports for the first time in over a year and it was listed on 2 TU and EX.  I disputed the charges after I called the Collection people who confirmed that they did actually show that I had paid that amount in 2001, but said there was still on outstanding balance of $23.50 for a commentment to make future purchases that I wasn't even aware of.  they then said if I paid it, I would in turn get a voucher in that amount for future purchases from the book club.  Can they really make you pay for something you never received?  And why are they waiting so long to report this and write me about it?

They offered to settle the account and remove it from the credit reports.  Today I paid it, and am praying that it actually gets removed as it is showing seriously overdue for nearly a year now.

In the meantime, TU changed the amount due to the $24.50 the very next day, but EX did nothing about the dispute.  I thought that to be interesting.

Do you think they will really have this account totally deleted from my reports or just mark it paid?  They better remove it!!

Re: disputing with CB

IMO  you made a mistake in paying!!!  unless you have a PFD in writting they do not have to delete. ALSO  this was in 2001  which means it would have to fall off your CR this year!!!!!

Im sure that this was a CA that was reporting. You also should have been past SOL!

Never talk to a CA    never sign your name to anything that goes to a CA.    Always DV a CA  before doing anything....they must prove that they are licensed in your state (if not they can not collect)  IF they were not assigned or bought the account they are not authorized to collect.

By paying you may have reset SOL!!

Re: disputing with CB

I was afraid ot that.  This never showed on my CR until this past year and it was purchased by The collection company....who is the one that posted.  I found it very interesting that they showed that I actually had paid it in their records when I called.

I sent them a letter stating I wanted it removed right away and placed a dispute.  But then when TU changed the amount from $54 to $23.5 I figured it wasn't getting removed, just changed and then EX didn't do anythiing about it after the dispute.  That is why I paid.

I really pray I didn't screw up.  I did put to process ONLY if they agree to remove it from my 3 credit reports.  Will that help?
