I recently received a letter (last week) from a collection agency for the amount of $54. I knew I paid that bill a long time ago to the creditor (book club) by couldn't prove it. I pulled my 3 credit reports for the first time in over a year and it was listed on 2 TU and EX. I disputed the charges after I called the Collection people who confirmed that they did actually show that I had paid that amount in 2001, but said there was still on outstanding balance of $23.50 for a commentment to make future purchases that I wasn't even aware of. they then said if I paid it, I would in turn get a voucher in that amount for future purchases from the book club. Can they really make you pay for something you never received? And why are they waiting so long to report this and write me about it?
They offered to settle the account and remove it from the credit reports. Today I paid it, and am praying that it actually gets removed as it is showing seriously overdue for nearly a year now.
In the meantime, TU changed the amount due to the $24.50 the very next day, but EX did nothing about the dispute. I thought that to be interesting.
Do you think they will really have this account totally deleted from my reports or just mark it paid? They better remove it!!
