library sent me to collection; advised to write investigate and remove letter to CBs

I was sent to collection (Unique Nat'l Collection) because of overdue fees. I didn't know the fees had gotten so out of control because the library and Credit Agency's notices were being sent to an old address. I happened to check my credit report last month and saw I had been sent to collection. I paid off my library fines, but it's still on my report. Unique won't budge on the issue; the library told me to write a letter to all Credit Bureau's asking them to investigate and remove the item. Is this the same as a PFD? Which one should I do? Here's the weirdest part: my TU score is 599, my Experian is 581, and Equifax is 586 BUT Equifax doesn't have my collection on their report... so I'm wondering if my score will even improve that much if the library collection is taken off? Please help! Thanks!

welcome jj15,

No you do not need a Pay For Delete because you are saying you have already paid.

Who did you pay?

Do you know if the CA pulled your credit report as well? I believe the Pintos case is applicable to library related fees/collection.

I hope CA did not pull your credit, if they did, SUE!

Trying, I don't think they pulled my credit report. There are no inquiries in my report, so I'm guessing they didn't.

Hi jj,  send the CA  a DV......they must answer it within 30 days or stop reporting!

You should have your receipt for the payment. DO not give the CA any info. other then what is on your CR....do not sign the letter...just type your name.

IF they do not answer on day 31   dispute with any CRA that is reporting.

Never talk to a CA on the phone!!!! everything in writting.

You want this off your CR and the CRAs will not delete it by you asking them to. It must come from the CA.

ALL letters going to a CA is sent CMRRR.........that gives you proof and date that they received it. The date that they sign for it is the date that you start counting!

DV info. can also be found on the freq.requested thread:

i believe now that you paid off the library, you can DV the CA + the collection should be removed from your report as you have no debt to the library.

the library should be able to give you a statment of some kind! All it has to say is that you do not own anything.

Also you will not need it unless the CA answers you.

Let us know if they answer or not and we can advice you what to do next.

Re: library sent me to collection; advised to write investigate and remove letter to CBs

The library has the capability to pull your now settled account back from the CA that they use, and to have them delete.  I believe Unique National Collections specifically collect library debt... or that just about every library uses them.

Speak to someone else in the library and ask them who at that library is responsible for ceasing UNC's collection activity on a paid account.  They are passing the buck.  If they are saying they want you to investigate... tell them you need that letter showing the account is paid and you are not in arrears since you should have that anyway.

I would dispute as 'not mine' on your CBRs as soon as you get the green card back from the DV CMRRR.
