nelson, watson and assoc - should I talk to them?

I have debt that is mine and is only a few years old so definitely within the sol.  It has gone to two previous collection agencies and is now with Nelson, Watson and Assoc. These people are extremely rude and hateful.  I really don't want to deal with them but they are stating that suit will follow if I don't pay it before the end of the month.  I do not want to be sued.  The original debt was for $800ish and now they are saying I owe $1000ish and it is increasing at 19.98% interest.  What is a lie and what is the truth?   I don't have the money now and probably won't for a few months. I am at a point that I can now pay off some of my debt and have been trying to do so but I know from reading posts so far on these forums that I am doing it all wrong.  Please help...anybody?  I need advice.

Have they purchased my debt or have they been hired by the original creditor?  Can they sue?

Hello crazyindebt, and welcome to the forums. Please read Credit Scoring 101, if you haven't already.

Don't speak to the CA over the phone, they are using guerilla tactics to get you to move. Are they corresponding via letter or leaving this stuff on voicemail? Keep in permanently whatever the medium. They are in violation, if they threaten to sue without intentions to do so.

I would DV them (search Lonnster Letter), send it out CMRRR. What is the DOFD on this debt?

Re: nelson, watson and assoc - should I talk to them?

I spoke with them last night and am supposed to call them back by noon today to let them know how much money I have come up with. He stated if I don't call back or come up with money then they will "tell their client" that I "refuse to pay" and I will get sued.

I am not completely clear on what all the acronyms mean and assume that may be in credit scoring 101 but havent' had time to read that just yet. Sorry.  I don't believe I have received anything in writing from them at all. I just returned a phone call last night that was on my voicemail several times over the last few days.

Okay so the DV letter I can handle - what is the DOFD? Is that date of delinguency?  If so then I would say it was most likely sometime in 2007. I don't have my credit report with me at the moment. I did however receive the last communication on this debt from another agency in I believe it was may 2008.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply.  I think I am about to stroke out here.

I am not saying that they will not tell the OC that you refuse to pay, but the reason we recommend not talking on the phone to a CA is precisely the reason that you just brought up. They are tricky, dirty and will say ANYTHING to get you to cough up the dough. DV them ASAP. Don't talk to them over the phone. In fact, while you are DVing the CA, call the OC and see if you can make installment arrangements on a PFD basis.
