questions about disputing

ok, i have poor credit, a few months ago i disputed some paid items to try and get them removed and i also had a 1200 credit card that i never paid from 6 years ago, i mean i made payments back then when i had the money but i havent made a payment in about 6 years, well i am trying to get a house so i thought well ill pay off all i owe and start fresh, i tried to contact the credit card company that i owe the 1200 to and they said they had no record of me and i tried the number on my credit report they said the same, so i figured well if i cant pay it ill dispute it, and i did and they removed it, so my question is, is that going to drop my score now? i tried to get a myfico score today and it said i havent had an active account for 6 months or more. 3 months ago my scores were lowest 535 and highest 573, they also removed the paid items i had 8 total 4 paid and 4 collections , now i have only 4 items total i owe is about 1,500. any help would be appreciated. i used privacy matters to get those scores.

Michele I just answered another thread from a member who disputed an old account on her credit report.  One of the biggest factors of your reports is age. By the time acollection hits the 6 plus year mark its not doing a lot of damage (a point or three) and removing it can actually reaged your credit profile which it looks as if it might.

You may get a drop in your score but the good news is that now when you come up for creidt limit increases and app for other cards, those collections wont show.

A win/lose situation as the previous poster put it.

Brammy, What did you mean when you said this: removing it can actually reaged your credit profile which it looks as if it might. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? Thanks for all your help on this i just joined the other day and i cant believe all that i have learned, i am really trying to rebuild credit when i was 19 i really screwed up my credit, i didn't even know what credit was i don't think, and now its caught up to me.

Re: questions about disputing

Michelle, here's the thread.  The poster disputed an old account on her credit file and had it successfully removed resulting in a 12 point drop. The thing was that it was the oldest account on file and removing it cut off those years of history.

Say this is the oldest account on your file and the next oldest if 4 years younger 6 years old.  While its there, your credit file shows an age of 7 years once you remoe it, it drops the age of your credit file to 4 years actually hurting your score instead of improving it.

Re: questions about disputing

wow that sucks, yes it was the oldest, it was from 2000 maybe 2001, but i also have others on my report from the same year, maybe it wont hurt to bad, i mean my scores are low as is. What secured card do you recommend to rebuild my credit? One that will not charge tons of fees? Thanks for your help again i really appreciate it!!

Re: questions about disputing

For secured cards try joing a local credit union.  They seem to have the best rates.  BofA has a good secured card whereyou can secure 500 for 99.00.  Cap1 isn;t the best card around but its better than the monthly fee annual fee cards.  Also Orchardbank
