First steps in mortgage preapproval process

I'm looking to get a mortgage preapproval. Which of the following are good steps to take now?

1. Order my credit reports from all three bureaus

2. Order my 3 FICO scores from myFICO

3. Pay down my small credit card balance to maximize my score. myFICO report shows that is one of the factors keeping my score down.

Any other tips/steps I should be thinking about concerning my credit before I move forward?
Thanks.

Re: First steps in mortgage preapproval process

Your initial thoughts are steps in the right directions. You definitely want to go over and clean up your reports and get that score up as high as possible. Getting the FICO mortgage scores here is vital so you know exactly where you stand beforehand. Hard to believe people didn't used to have such easy access to this like there is now. Even before getting pre approved, you can speak with a lender/loan officer in your area about your situation and they can give you advice on what to work on where you would hypothetically stand. Paying down CC balances the fastest way to boost your scores. If you have a messy credit report, head over to the Rebuilding forums. I started there about a year ago and took my own and my wifes scores from the 500s/low 600s to the mid 700s in about 5 months.

Other simple tips would be:

Avoid opening new credit lines

Don't close accounts if you don't have to

Make sure your DTI is in good shape

Re: First steps in mortgage preapproval process

Thanks a lot for the reply.  I've been managing my credit  and I've managed to get my score up to 794 in the last report. To pull my credit reports, that's where I go to www.annualcreditreport.com, right?

Should I just order my FICO scores from the myFICO site?

Thanks again for the tips.

Should I just order my FICO scores from the myFICO site? Yes. This is the only site you will get your mortgage scores. Not sure if that 794 you have is a FICO 8 or not.

Thanks again for the tips.

Re: First steps in mortgage preapproval process

Also note, with mortgage they will take the middle score of all 3 beareaus.  eg.

Experian - 780

Transunion - 775

Equifax - 760

They'll take 775 as your mortgage score.
