I am so gald!

I got a response to my email. They told me my accounts are okay and that they don't need anything to verify me. We will see what happens when my direct deposit posts.

You’re probably fine. I really do think how quickly I went and set up Zelle spooked them. I wasn’t really thinking about how that can easily look like fraud, especially since I had to change email addresses to link the right accounts to Zelle since BECU knocks out both the email address and phone number like NFCU while my current bank, you can choose between email OR phone number.

But if it was going to get flagged anyway, I am glad that it got flagged before I switched things around. At least this way I know they won’t shut me down later, a horror story I have heard with a few credit unions (NFCU being the major one), since shutting me out of my SSDI would be a huge disaster. I would be making use of Zelle and external push and pull pretty quickly so maybe it’s good I was so quick to set it up and get myself locked out now.

I hope so. I did set up Zelle almost right the way too but I did not change email addresses or anything like that. My accounts are still zero right now except for trial deposits, so we will see this week if they flag me or not. I agree it is better to get flagged and shut down early on than months later like NFCU. I really do feel that there is no excuse for what NFCU does. So I hope BECU is more straight forward.

Yeah the NFCU security freezes seem to be very rare these days. NFCU has been getting some flack though. They had a settlement for locking people out of their accounts and now there’s a pending class action over checking overdraft fees related to OOPS protection.

If I don’t get in at BECU in the end, I may decide to just stay with my current bank and use DCU for my savings and keep my NFCU checking in case I ever need to take a cash advance off my Platinum and send it to my bank’s checking.

Clearly this is all way too complex and it’s very easy to see why I would rather just move everything to BECU.

What is your current bank if I may ask. Or you mean NFCU?

Re: BECU Eligibility Question

Someone asked earlier if they HP. They soft pull TransUnion and Chex for membership.

Re: BECU Eligibility Question

So $100 posted on BECU savings, no lock up to my account. So we will see if I’m lucky. I guess first 30 days is when accounts are closed generally.

1stBank, a regional bank here in Colorado.

Don’t get me wrong, they’re not bad. All customer service is here in CO and they’re available 24 hours a day including holidays, they’re just very conservative and they like to charge fees. They charge $10 a year to have a debit card, for example, and their reasoning is that they don’t charge you for replacements — well if you lose your debit card, you should be assessed a fee instead of all of us paying a fee for the irresponsible people in the world. Or, you know, just take a loss on the $2 it probably actually costs to print out that green and white plastic.

What really holds me back though is they won’t extend me any credit. If they would give me a small PLOC, I would be less likely to leave, but seeing as I never actually keep money in the account, I don’t really blame them for thinking I live beyond my means when the truth is I live cashless as much as possible so I run all of my cash through credit cards to earn rewards. 🤷‍♂️

Re: BECU Eligibility Question

Ugh!

So I got an email about half an hour ago that said “Next Steps in Your BECU membership,” and called them to find out if I was still locked out.

They told me that they can’t take my documentation because it’s not scanned. Apparently taking a picture is not acceptable despite the fact that I was told that was perfectly acceptable. They wanted me to scan and fax it, which I can’t do since we don’t have a scanner and I’m home bound so I told her to go ahead and close the account and mail me a check for the deposits — she said that I would have to send that request in writing and I went off about all of the hoops I have gone through, she called over and explained my situation to them and they agreed to close my account and mail me a check.

I am so irritated by this whole ordeal that I am going to file a complaint with NWCUF and ask them to refund my $20 and if they won’t do that, I’m taking it up with a dispute through Synchrony.

If you are going to open up your field of membership through an association with a credit union foundation, you need to be a bit more flexible when it comes to documentation or implement a secure upload service like every other major credit union has. Security Service doesn’t even have a decent website or app but they sure do have a document upload service and they’re GEOFENCED!

🤬🤬🤬

Re: BECU Eligibility Question

You can now scan documents via iPhone documents app and send them as PDF. iPhone natively supports it. But I can see how frustrating this is. I’m sorry things didn’t work out.

You can’t do that for fraud verification, it has to be scanned and faxed on an actual flatbed. They won’t take anything else other than snail mail photocopies or brought into the branch.

Its alright, I have other options, and quite frankly if they’re going to be this anal this early, it makes me question how good they would be about dealing with problems later.

Re: BECU Eligibility Question

I wouldn't fault a bank for being sticklers when opening your first account with them.
Better that than being too lax and letting identity theives through.
