Not sure how long this has been an option. According to the BECU membership eligibility page (here), you can now become a member by donating to KEXP public radio. The minimum one time donation appears to be $10. The eligibility page lists this path to membership alongside NWCUF, the other known method of joining out of state. There are also more details on the post announcing the partnership and swanky new KEXP-branded debit card (here).
Has anyone tried joining this way yet? Even though BECU slashed the rates on their checking and savings, I've still found them to be a top notch credit union.
Worked for me.
Just expect to go through hell verifying your identity.
Good luck.

Mind elaborating?
Many many people have gotten tripped in their financial crimes unit, and when it happens they freeze your funds lock your account, and usually to get it unlocked they want COLOR fax (if that even exists), of ID, social security cards, utility bill, sometimes lease agreements, sometimes poi / tax returns, and will find ANY reason to reject what you send in

You can do a search on BECU, there are quite a few stories on this ordeal with them.

Eee gads I see that now. wow.
baker_miller,
I would think twice before you join. I had to deal with their financial crimes department. I had to mail in a bunch of documents to verify my idea and it tooks 3 calls from them to get everything resloved. They were nice and civil but they made me go theough hoops to get everything cleared. If I had known the extent of it before I joined, I would have gone somewhere else.
Just my opinion.

If I ever decided to join I might do it at a branch when visiting Charleston, SC... their one SC branch is at the large boeing facility there.... As it stands, other than a willingness to let folks have decent credit limits, I see no real benefit............

They're detailed and exacting in what they want to see with regard to the documentation they request. I believe that may in part be due to their being a WA state-chartered institution with specific regulatory requirements they're required to abide by and must positively demonstrate and prove compliance during their routine regulatory audits.
If you can't/won't/don't on the 1st try or if they find a potential anomaly you'll get flagged for the CU equivalent of a TSA Special Secondary Security Screening.
I myself had no trouble as a legal resident of Massachusetts with the membership application/approval process nor have I had any trouble with them in the 5 months since I joined.
may be I am one of the lucky one who apply membership without any problem. You can see it here https://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Personal-Finance/BECU-Eligibility-Question/m-p/5489512#M58588
and I always suggest people apply by snail mail because if one applies online and stuck in security department then you have to send in paperwork by request anyway. For me good in one shot is a better route
occasionally, they do have referal promo. I refer my brother who lives in east coast without any problem either. Both of us has $100 each
I see most recently, alot of members here have trouble join and antifan. A handful horrible stories by using keyword becu in search bar
