@Anonymous wrote:I am interested in a credit union but I am not sure which one would be best. I don't know all the ones I can join yet, (seems like you can join a lot of them with a donation) let alone if they are even good. I would like one that is well rounded with what it offers if possible, but most importantly one that has a good mortgage program. I won't be getting a mortgage for a while but I would like to join who ever I intend to get it from before hand. Maybe a credit union wouldn't even be best, I have always been told they are better by my family and friends (a lot of people on this forum seem to like to CU as well), but I never got one. I have just been with wells fargo and haven't felt like moving somewhere. I want a credit union regardless, (for the savings if anything) but if they aren't best for getting a mortgage let me know.
Our OP stresses in his first post and again in post #10 three things:
(1) That he is looking to join a CU very soon
(2) He won't buy a home for quite a while
(3) Whatever CU he joins today will need to be the lender he uses for his mortgage in the fairly distant future.
I think #3 is a bad thing to lock yourself into. You can't know today what lender will be the best fit for you years from now. Indeed, most home buyers can't know which lender will be the best fit for them even three months from now -- they need to go through a process where many lenders vie for their business and they choose the best offer.

You're not wrong, now that I think about it, I would have removed that from the post, because it doesn't really make sense. I can't just join a credit union and then get a mortgage from them without looking at other places. So I guess that isn't important to me, mainly online banking, and a nice savings is important. I should be able to find one like that, lots have been mentioned. I might try to join becu, through the mail, I will see. I will call them first though because it would so much easier to join that way if they will let me.
*side note, my brother actually was in the military, which I completely forgot about. How hard is it to join nfcu, I think you can join if someone in your family was in the military but not sure what I would even need, I do want something easy to join.

I would call and check. It's that good a credit union that it's worth a few minutes to make sure.
Even if you're not eligible by Idaho county they might think of another path to membership.
I was able to join BECU through snail mail application and I'm a Utah resident.

I don't have any personal experience but America First and Mountain America are big around Idaho and Utah.
I might try to join this way, after I call them first.

it's easy to join NFCU that way

Hey BrokenC... do you have any open loans right now? If not, Navy Fed would be an especially good choice for you, since it works well with the Share Secured Loan Technique.

Yes, I have a student loan open right now. I will look into them to see what I would need to join.

Hey-
Idaho Central Credit Union (ICCU) as you mentioned is great!! What part of the state are you in?
They have great online banking, mobile app, bill pay. The things that you are looking for and are local to Idaho so you should have a close branch or two depending on your location.
That is what I have heard, I actually live in the capital city. (boise) I have seen that they appear to be great in the areas I want, I really like the ones the I have been given in this thread so far though. Right now, I am really looking into joining becu, it seems good. I might end up joining iccu as well though since I do live near lots of them. It is really hard to choose just one, I like 3 of them right now. (Maybe I just need to join more then one)

Personally I like diversification, rather than putting all my eggs in one basket.
