Hello everyone!
Prepare for a ride!
Okay, to start off with, does anyone use Capital One and not have problems? (Checking, Savings, Credit)
I originally got my first two credit cards with them almost 2 years ago and have been stuck at their $500 limit on both since. I have a few other bank credit cards ranging from $1000 to $6000 cl. This was already a strike against Capital One that had me debating closing my accounts, but I know I opened them with subprime scores and wanted to give them a chance.
Well, I opened one checking and two savings acoounts with them next and have been using them with no problem until recently. I decided to do a BT check from my Wells Fargo Card and deposit it into my Capital One account. I do the mobile deposit on my phone and Boom!, two hours later I get an email that my account has been frozen for suspicious activity and to call them between the hours of 9a-6p M-Sat.
I give them a call the next morning(sat), get answered then transferred then dropped back into queue three times! Then I am on hold for around 45 minutes. So I grab a second phone, call from it while I'm hold and get an answer within three minutes. Then same thing happens, transfers and dropped back into queue. Around three hours passes and I finally get through to a CSR. She tells me she has to call WF and verify the check. She comes back on the line 10 minutes later and says the hold for WF is too long, and I'll have to call Cap1 back later. I say okay because I'm honestly very understanding.
I then call Wells Fargo myself, get through right away and get told that they don't know what Capital One is tripping on, but if they keep tripping to call back and they'll cancel the BT and move the funds to my Wells Checking (I didn't know this was possible or I would have done it to begin with). I call Cap1 and around 45 min -1hr later get a CSR and she finally looks into my account, calls Wells and verifies, then comes back just to tell me that because there was such a situation around the check, they're going to hold it for 5 extra days. At this point I say whatever, okay, and end the call.
This is when it gets fun!
I check my Capital One account (Here's when I'll state some finance info)
I only keep a few hundred in my Capital One checking (most is in Savings). So before this fiasco with the BT check (which was only $2500) I had a balance of $310.
When I check my balance is shows -$2190 and shows a $2500 hold listed twice on my account!
I called back as soon as they were open(Monday) and had to go through it all again (a little more quickly) but then had to do a three-way call with Wells Fargo and Capital One just for Wells Fargo to verify the check again! Once this is done, the Capital One CSR finally releases all funds to me, but can't explain why my account was showing negative but then tells me that when my American Express Card tried to pull their payment from my Cap1 account that morning it was denied. So now because of them I have a returned payment to my Amex, who I just got in with.
Amex actually put a hold on my account because of this, and it won't come off until the payment processes again.
I am super worried that this is going to stay on my Amex record and affect my chances of CLIs from them, which is annoying. Has anyone had any experience with this?
Or have any horror stories about Capital One?
(Or any recommendations for better banks?)
Wow! What a mess. I have no advice, really. We (my husband and I) do most of our banking with WF. We have had a great experience with them since leaving a small local credit union a couple of years ago. I hope Amex doesn't pentalize you. Maybe if you call them, and explain what happened, they can notate your account or something. I had a returned check for an auto loan payment years ago for a bank error (I received a reimbursement check from work with the wrong account number printed at the bottom.) I called up the loan company and explained. They were so nice and even refunded my late/returned check fee. Granted, I wasn't a new customer so that might have some play in it. Sending you good wishes that it gets straightened out as painless as possible.

Sounds like an annoyance, OP. Sorry to hear you went through all that. As far as Amex, I would suggest exactly what CreditChemistry recommends and call them to explain what happened and hopefully they will be understanding of the situation.
Thanks for the good wishes! I called Amex and explained everything to them, the rep even submitted a request to get the returned payment charge removed from my account since it was Capital Ones fault. Unfortunately they don't seem to be able to answer whether or not it will affect CLIs or new accounts in the future, but they did notate on my account that it was the fault of my bank for randomly freezing my accounts.
After this WF will definitely stay my main bank for now. Bye bye Cap One!
