Checking account recommendations

I've got a chase premier plus checking account I use for my day to day banking. No fees, great online banking system and bill pay. The only concern is that there is no branch really convenient to my house or office. Because of that, I've been looking at maybe switching to a more local bank, but I'd want to make sure it would provide similar service. No fees, easy transfers, reliable recurring transfers, etc.
all my money now goes through chase, and I automatically direct a fixed amount every week to external savings accounts. It's a great system, except for those rare times I need a branch.
I've never had a need for a branch with USAA, but that's because there was never an expectation. Is there something to be said for a local branch that knows me? Or does that not make a difference at all?

To each his own on this one ... I have a local bank so I can do some of the things that are hard to do over the internet. Truth, my local bank tries hard to match the USAA's, NFCU's and Chase's along with others but, they just are not big enough to make it all work. They do provide me things like the old days and I can see one of the bank officers and they bend a little on the requirements Smiley Wink

Re: Checking account recommendations

I believe most banks/CU either online or local will mostly have identical services. So for me I will pick the one that has extra service that others don't have like higher apr % return, free checks, rebate ATM fee, etc

I think chase premeir plus is not a free checking, you have to meet some requirement to remain free. I like to have a worry free checking account with alot of no FEE. thank you

Re: Checking account recommendations

I would go with a Credit Union like Navy Federal or a local Credit Union.

Re: Checking account recommendations

I recently moved and one of the first things I did was set up an account at a local CU.  I like being able to go into a branch if I have a problem, I get a decent APR on my deposits and it sets up a good relationship for those large purchases in a couple years.  New car for the wife and a mortgage.  With Share Branching you can get service just about nationwide as long as your CU participates.
