Chexsystems and credit union questions.

Hello Folks,

A while back, almost four years ago, when I was unemployed I had an incident in which my credit union checking account was pretty seriously hit with overdraft fees and ended up in the hole $500. I was unable to pay it off, and my account was closed. Of course that incident referred me to Chexsystems, and for a few years I had a Chase Liquid account instead of a traditional checking account. Chase eventually convinced me to upgrade to a traditional checking account with them, and because I had years of responsible history with my liquid account they didn't care about my Chexsystems entry. Now I have a traditional checking account again, and I am able to manage my finances much better than I was previously able to.

I am now in the process of rebuilding my credit as well. I have already improved it a decent amount by getting two secured credit cards, and a student loan consolidation. However, I am looking to buy a car in the near future, and I am interested in going through a credit union. I am also interested in possibly applying for a credit builder loan, which I know is usually only an option at credit unions.

I am curious to know whether or not the Chexsystems entry from my previous credit union is going to prevent me from opening an account or obtaining a loan or secured credit card etc. from another credit union. Has anyone had experiences with this before?

Thanks!

Re: Chexsystems and credit union questions.

It may or may not. I had an overdraft on a closed checking account for an autopay that posted after I had closed an account. 2 of my CU's didn't pull chex, 2 others just made me show it was paid. One just said no. there is a site that shows who pulls chex systems and who does not.
