Hello All,
I'm not sure if I am posting this in the correct category...
I would like to sign my husband up with Navy Fed CU but we have absolutely no affiliation with the military. Somebody told me that you can be "invited" in by an existing member but I dont know if this is true and don't know anybody that is a member anyways. Is there any other way to get in?
Also I was advised of Addition Financial Credit Union but I have never heard of them and couldnt really find anything on this forum about them. Has anybody ever heard of them?
My reason for signing hubby up to a CU is to at least aquire a savings account to have a relationship with one and after try to apply for a decent credit card with a good SL. Possibly refinancing a motorcycle in th future.
He has good credit but just doesnt have the length of experience. Just to give an idea he has:
Wells Fargo CC - Limit at 2k, only had about 1 yr
American Express Blue Cash everyday (i think the name is) Limit at 4k less than 1 year
He's authorized on 3 of my cards that have been open only 2 years
Has loan thru synchrony for 30k for a Slingshot (considered motorcycle)
His "Fico" is at 694 and has no derogs and no late payments.
The only bad thing is that his Wells Fargo is at almost at limit due to an unforseen expense (and dropped his score 38 pts, he was at 734 fico) and in which he already knows he has to pay down asap.
We lived in Sunny Oralndo Florida if this piece of info helps.
Thanks in advance!
The only way in is through immediate family affiliation, such as parent, grandparent, etc. Through spouse, or member who is in same household.
Membership is meant for service personnel, past and present, and their families. There was once a loophole that allowed membership through donation, but method has been closed for many years now.

1. NFCU is a great credit union, but it's not the only fish in the sea. If he had a parent or grandparent in the military, that would suffice for the connection, but if not, don't sweat it.
2. You should just do a search for "credit union near me", and you will probably find various local credit unions that are available to people who live in your county.
3. Also sometimes people get eligibility through an employer or association of which they are a member, or through an education affiliation.
4. I don't know anything about Addition FCU. I see that they seem to have a nice low interest platinum card, but they got a lot of bad reviews on Wallet Hub: https://wallethub.com/profile/addition-financial-13307460i So perhaps you should skip it.
5. Some great credit unions which are open to all are PenFed, Langley, Unify, Evansville Teachers, Andigo, Chartway, Digital, Affinity, Hanscom, and SECU MD, and there are many more.
6. In applying for membership in a credit union, sometimes they do a hard pull even though you're not asking for credit. If you want to avoid that, ask before you apply.

I totally back up #5 on your list.
To add, one can get into Navy via household membership. Just living with a Navy member one can obtain membership.

Yeah, well we don't want to break up their marriage or anything ![]()

I agree with what some others have mentioned. Check and see if there are any local credits unions in your area. Even if you don't work for a participating employer or your employers don't have an associated credit union, many have open membership that if you live, work, worship or attend school in their georgraphical operating area you can join.
If that doesn't work, some others have been mentioned such as PenFed that have open membership.

I would be interested in dp's on addition as well and will keep an eye on this thread. Another one you may want to consider. https://www.midflorida.com/loans-and-mortgages/credit-cards/signature/
I ended up applying to Penfed for him. When I submitted the app I got an error message and stated needed to call the 800. Waited for hubby to get home and he called, surprising they were still open at 9 at night. They needed to verify his identity and we had to upload proof. Now we wait...
