I applied to join DCU because I eventually want to apply for one of their cards. First they wanted my driver's license. I sent that. Now they want a copy of a utility bill and my social security card. Is this normal? I really don't like sending out my social security card, which can lead to identity theft.
Update: I went ahead and uploaded all the documents about an hour ago. Just now got an email saying I was approved for membership.

You have to give them your social security number. The photocopy of that card isn't going to REALLY help someone who already has your social and wants to steal your identity.
And yes - 100% normal if they're trying to validate your identity for some reason. I _think_ I had to do that with them when I joined. They have a lot of members outside their area. They are simply being more cautious.
Is membership a hard pull and if so, which bureau do they use?

They use EQ almost exclusively, but NO, as of last year (6/6/2020) their application did not require an HP

What they're requesting is consistent with what most credit unions will request when applying for membership. The SS card documents your SSN, your drivers license documents your identity, and the utility bill (cell phone bills are often not accepted) provides evidence of your current address. Some CUs can support photos of the documents they request along with a secure process to upload them, others want you to mail them a printed copy.
If you're concerned about mishandling you can always send your letter CMRR so you have physical confirmation that DCU received and signed for the letter.
Thanks for the input, guys. It was worth the effort.

I'd also recommend opening the Primary Savings account and parking $1000 in there for the easy $60 a year.
congrats on your approval. I must have gotten lucky,I applied for a savings account they requested my DL and a utility bill approval came next day. easy 60 bucks a year is hard to turn down.
