I'm sitting in a DCU branch as I type this. Very, very happy that I read about them here two years ago and glad they are local. People from around the country use them though. Free EQ04 scoure monthly along with great car rates and good service.

For a national, state dept federal is very rebuild friendly. They do a secured card and secured loan combo on a soft pull. Your in with them is the american consumer council. Put consumer in the promo code on the ACC website and no cost. As a credit union junkie, i suggest a national and a local CU. If you happen to be in either Austin TX the chicago metro or denver metro i can suggest some good local CUs as well. Its nice to have a local CU, as the ladies know me, and always alert me to anything special happening. One of my locals currently has a deal going, car loans at the next best terms, for example 5 yr loan at 4 year rates, 4 yr loan at 3 yr rates. And their rates are rock bottom anyway.i could take out a 90% ltv loan for 4 years and if i set it up as an autopay my rate would currently be .99%.
Well I'm from NY, Broooklyn to be exact. I've seen some such as MCU (Municipal Credit Union) as well as NYMFCU (New York Methodist Federal). It would be good to go with a CU thats local right?
I would suggest one of each. One local, so they know you when you walk in, and one of the big national ones. The big guys for obvious reasons offer more different types of services, and having a local credit union where you arent just a number offers you a personal connection. Another benefit of having one that is local is you have the ability to attend the annual meetings (which I recommend for everybody). Some of them are very interesting and as one of the owners of the cooperative I would advise everyone to attend. You also will have the opportunity to possibly serve on a commitee and give back to the credit union and the community.
I serve on the membership committee for one of my locals and on the new products committee of another. Its a way to get a look into how the credit unions work, and to give something back. I have thouroghly enjoyed doing it for the last 2 years, and will most likely continue to do so.
