Had to grow up, started a Roth IRA

When I came to this site, I had a lot of small goals in mind; the largest of which was to gain control of my financial life. My credit scores have improved from low-mid 600s to where they are now. Instead of worrying about bills, I now have a decent emergency savings account and I save early for larger expenses that come around a few times a year (car/bike/life insurance, Christimas spending, etc.). I am saving to buy my first home. The one thing that I have stayed away from is retirement. In 2008 my 401k was wiped out when the market crashed. I have avoided retirement savings since then. I don't get retirement benefits at work, and I didn't have much to put in it, so I didn't want something that has a lot of fees (which would eat up what I was trying to save). I found the myRA.gov account a few days ago, and I finally decided to open it. For those who didn't see my original post, this is a Roth IRA backed by the US Treasury. It has no minumums, no fees, etc. I thought it was my best option for now, so I signed up. I will make my first contribution as soon as they send some test deposits to my checking account.

It's not as profitable as a typical employer matched option, but if you don't have the employer match, or if you are avoiding retirement savings for whatever reason, I recommend checking out myRA.gov. It is a step in the right direction and better than not saving at all. I finally had to grow up and do it. I feel like my financial picture is coming together, and that makes me feel incredibly good about the steps I have made this year. Cheers!

Out of curiousity why didn't your 401k rebound in the last few years?

I didn't contribute to it after that. I changed jobs and closed the account. Then I was jaded on retirement. Young and dumb. Poor decisions made in my 20s. Now I realize that retirement is an actual reality and I need to be prepared.

Gotcha, you're not alone. I had a number of friends do the same thing, and they haven't started saving again... Good job and starting back up!

Congrats on starting the Roth. The markets can be intimidating but you need to be a part of them if you want to retire comfortably (unless you invest in income producing assets like rentals). If you're still wary i'd recommend sticking with an automatic investment to get as close as possible to the yearly max (assuming there is one with the IRA you're talking about). Then twice a year check in, see how things are going, and rebalance if you need to. Investing for retirement is investing for the long haul. So the day to day or even year to year swings really dont matter. On a 20-30 year time frame the market offers pretty much the best returns available.

Grats! I was in the same boat just last year. Took me way too long to realize how much I was missing out on D:. Keep up the good work!

Thanks, everyone. I know I am way behind the curve now, and I may not even be able to max out my contribution this year, but I do feel better having something set up. I am going to start small for now.

Re: Had to grow up, started a Roth IRA

I got the test deposits for the IRA and funded my account for the first time. I really like how easy this program is set up. I scheduled recurring deposits once a month but I can log in and deposit more money at any time. I am so glad I did this. Now I am trying to convince my niece that she should start early (she is 19). If I can get her to commit to putting any amount of money in it, I will feel like this is a win.

That's really great! I really want to start doing that myself...my company even has a 401(k) with match, I just haven't gotten around to setting it up. *sighs* I hope this inspires me to do it soon.

Do eeet!

My current employer is making me shake my head.  We just had our new 2016 benefits package released, still no 401K match, but guess what we got instead?

Wait for it...
