@ldkcivilservant you might check with NFCU to see if a military brother-in-law makes you eligible.
I don't recall anybody being directly eligible via an in-law, but of course it's easy enough to work around. Your BIL can sponsor his spouse/your sibling, then your sibling can sponsor you.
Joining NFCU was perhaps one of the smartest financial moves I've made. My sister (who used to be a regular on here) did some research and found out that she was eligbile through my late grandpa (who served in WW2, RIP. I miss him. ). They told her if they were ever audited, she'd need to get a copy of his DD-214 discharge papers, and my dad's birth certificate to prove lineage to my grandpa.
I joined by opening up a checking and savings account in March of 2018 with her sponsoring me, not thinking much of it other than putting $5 into savings for my share of membership. Later on (last summer), I was talking to my sister about NFCU and how she has all these credit cards. I asked her, "Do you think NFCU will approve me?" She said, "You just gotta apply and find out." My scores were in the crapper at the time, low 500s. I applied for the Flagship Rewards VISA... filled out my info, and much to my shock: $15K credit line!! I was so happy! I made the decision at that point to move ALL of my business to NFCU... made them my primary checking/savings, opened a business checking and savings with them, etc. Only thing I won't do is move my car loan to them (because they don't do Route 66 warranties with the vehicles). Did the 91/3 rule and in October, applied for the Cash Rewards card... BOOM! Another $15K. I have been very careful and judicious with my credit, but I've also allowed myself to have fun with it. (Took my dream vacation to Australia.)
Right now, they won't extend anymore credit to me (reached my CL with them), but that's fine. I'm going to enjoy what I have with them, and hope in the future I can get interest rates lowered and CLIs.
I had the e-mail yesterday to welcome me to NFCU. Upon further research, I'm not sure their mortgage product is right for us (which was the reason for joining in the first place) but it's a good relationship to start never the less.

They are a high volume VA lender. They do some regular house loans also
Lucky. I got a HP even though everyone said it would be soft.

What info did they require for you? My grandfather served in the U.S. Army many years ago and has been deceased for a couple years. I would like to become a member though.
Give them a call 1-888-842-6328
Will do tomorrow! Thank you.

Not sure if my file is good enough for a CC yet. Lol.
They might surprise you. It’s worth a shot. Welcome to the family!
