They didn't ask for my father's information when I joined; not even his name!
My assumption would be that the same negative record appears, only now with a $0 balance owed. But the record of you having gotten into serious trouble with a bank would still be there.
It's like paying a collection... the payment does not in itself cause the collection to vanish or the charged-off account to vanish either.
Is there any reason you haven't pulled your report from EWS to take a look? If I were you I would have pulled both EWS and ChexSystems.
The thing about you writing a check to yourself does indeed sound odd. You are right that writing a check to yourself is perfectly legal and is fairly commonplace. Weird that this could have been reported as a reason for a bank to close your account.
It sounds like there was another different bank, however, whom you actually did owe money and were not paying -- but then later the debt was settled as part of your bankruptcy. That is what I am gathering from your initial post. You were thinking that this was on your EWS record and you are surprised it isn't.
It is possible that it was on your record, but that over the passage of time it has fallen off. When did you owe money to this bank? (On what date?) And when was your bankruptcy? If the negative event with the bank was far enough in the past (five years?) it may have fallen off.
Since it sounds like you have had negative events in your past associated with bank accounts, if I were you I would get a written copy of my reports from all four CRAs that handle bank and check issues: EWS, ChexSystems, Telecheck, and Certegy. You can find out about them in this list of CRAs on page 20-21:

I don't have any problem opening bank accounts.
In your initial post, you indicated that Navy had rejected your application for membership a year ago due to negative info on EWS. It was this that made me think that you had experienced a problem in the recent past opening a bank account.
My feeling is that everybody should pull their EWS and CS reports at least once every few years, for the same reason that everybody should take a look at their TU, EQ, and EX reports. So I don't limit that advice to people who are certain they have problems.
Anyway, best of luck with your Navy app and in your general banking and credit future.
