Marine Federal Credit Union

My father recently passed away and was a career Marine, Vietnam Vet and Purple heart

recepient.  Anyway my mother wants to open a new bank account and I suggested Marine

Federal.  I read the several posts praising Navy Federal, but was wondering if Marine Federal was

basically the same as NFCU.  Do the offer the same great benefits, etc. etc.  She could join NFCU,

but there's a Marine. Fed. located in our town but a NFCU in a town 45 minutes away.

Until today I'd never heard of Marine FCU, so I can't comment on it.

But I can tell you that NFCU has the best customer service I've ever seen in a financial institution.

Re: Marine Federal Credit Union

hpertrain,

I'm sorry to hear about the death of your father. I know the death of a father is an extremely hard thing to deal with especially if you have to take care of your mom, as is my case.

When my exwife was stationed at Camp LeJeune, I banked at Marine Federal because they had a branch right by my office. I worked long shifts and it was easier for me to stop by that branch than going to Navy Federal. When I banked there, I never had an issue at all. Their customer service is excellent and their loan decisions are made locally when the CU. Their credit card rates are better than NFCU. The car and loan rates are about the same between both CU's. One plus for Marin Federal is they are on the Shared CU system, something that NFCU isn't. Navy Federal has a real US based customer service that really is open 24/7 and they really do have an excellent mobile app. Too be honest, you can't go wrong with either CU.

After my dad passed away, I encouraged my mom to join Navy Federal to take advantage of the CD's rates. Why earn 1.x% on a CD when you can get 3%  at NFCU. She moved part of her savings of there and is earning the most she ever has. She also has a cash rewards Visa that has the highest credit line she ever had. Since the nearest branch is about an hour away, she does the bulk of transactions online. She really likes their call center customer service, and they always do what they say they are going to do. I will drive her over there once a month so she can deposit the cash she earns.  She still uses a local bank and a CU for her everyday checking and everyday financial stuff.

Hope this helps.
