I've seen so much praise for NFCU but I'm not exactly sure how to get in. I'm not military. My grandfather was retired military but he never had a NFCU account and is deceased. A friend of mine is NFCU but we don't live together so household is out. Any ideas or am I out of luck?

Your only option is call them and tell that about your grandfather. You'll need his SSN and other identifying info. Whatever you do don't join under any false pretenses. NFCU's security department is very active and will catch you and shut down accounts if that were to occur (not suggesting that you would).

I found this information in the forum today.. http://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Personal-Finance/Navy-Federal-CU-The-REAL-way-in-for-those-that-dont...
It may be worth checking out
My husband and I got our membership this way. Totally legit!
Good to know, I decided to apply this way also. I will update this thread upon approval. Thanks!
I also joined the San Diego chapter of the Navy League! Faxed in my application this past Wednesday. Called on yesterday to confirm receipt, but membership had no record of receiving it. I was advised that I could either apply over the phone or go into a branch. I opted to go into a branch and I am now a member. I received my account number and a debit card. My account will be funded through electronic funds transfer on Tuesday. Yeay!!!
