My dad passed a number of years ago as well.
Navy's rep didn't ask for anything other than my dad's name, branch, and which war he served. The rep seemed to be satisfied that I personally knew the particulars, rather than whether I had documentation.
I can't help but hear his ex-Marine voice exclaim, "Navy!? What for?!" 😄
