At some point we should get a running total of new members that used this thread to join, so I can update the original post. Thanks everyone for continuing to share your experiences and your awesome approvals for NFCU and their products. I can only imagine how many peoples lives will be changed with what they are able to accomplish with their new earned credit opportunities. Congrats to those that have joined so far. I have been enjoying my membership, thats for sure.

That info you provided was awesome! Ive been wanting either an account with usaa or navy for so long and saw no hope! now im in with a checking, share account and credit card. Although I am mad at myself, i should have waited till name error was fixed to get credit card. I really thought that i could call and they could fix it, as I had scanned them more than enogh copies of ID including a DL, SS card and US Passport. But, i filed out the form and sent it right back. My name is still showing up wrong on the welcome page and the credit card is already showing too.
Okay...so because I saw some doubt in this thread, and because the last thing I would want to do is start my banking relationship with NFCU with any questions or doubt...I sent them a secure message.
I said:
I recently joined NFCU by way of being eligible via my Navy League San Diego Chapter membership.
As I have always wanted to be part of NFCU, I was very happy to learn about the membership eligibility via the Navy League.
But the last thing I want is to join NFCU under any false pretenses.
Is it possible to confirm that my eligibility is in fact 100% legit?
They just sent me this response:
Thank you for using Navy Federal's eMessaging Service, Mr. [my last name]. In 2010, USA Federal Credit Union was merged with Navy Federal at the request of the National Credit Union Administration. As part of the due diligence with the merger, Navy Federal was asked to continue to accept USA Federal Credit Union's Charter, which includes the Navy League of United States San Diego Council. Since you are a part of the Navy League of San Diego, you are eligible for membership with us. If you have further questions, please let us know. We hope you have a nice day.
***EDIT***
Everyone, especially the OP, has been great in this thread with all of the information shared. It wasn't that I doubted anyone or what they said. I just wanted to hear it from the source.

Thanks so much for going the extra mile and getting this information (and for sharing it with us here).
Since NFCU is well-known for having little tolerance for membership issues, it's nice to know exactly how the Navy League qualification works.
This post will likely help anybody who was 'straddling the fence' on joining to go ahead and move forward... I know if I were depending on Navy League membership for qualification for NFCU this extra bit of knowledge would personally put me at ease.
Also, shout-out to Yourewelcome for starting this thread... many folks are likely going to benefit from this knowledge!

As much as I want to share the knowledge and help others...do you think it's wrong of me to post that message in a public forum? I'm torn...it's like, it's a legit way to get in, but NFCU obviously doesn't want to advertise it.

No worries there, my friend.
It's public knowledge (by NFCU's own admission), so it's OK to mention it on here. They may not be actively advertising it, but they are OK with it otherwise they woudn't have agreed to it as a condition of their takeover of USA FCU.
I generally tend to err on the side of caution myself but I see no issues with this at all, either technically or ethically.

Thanks for your valuable info. I applied by mail and overnighted the app to them. It was received today. Hopefully I will know something by next week. I was looking for a good CU to join so your info was right on time. I do like your name. I also hope that a new thread explores the number of people who used the method you provided to join. I think it would be most interesting. Many thanks.
