Navy Federal Joining Process

Just wanted to post this for anyone else that might be looking at NFCU based on all the positive feedback here. Over the past few months, I've opened a number of new accounts and had experiences with multiple banks ranging from Wells Fargo to PenFed to US Bank to SoFi to smaller banks with a fraction of the staff that the big ones do. Some accounts were for credit cards, others for checking account promos.

Well NFCU has been the absolute slowest for me so far. Since I was trying to join under a sibling relationship that may not be a member, I couldn't do it online and had to call in. That initial call process started on October 26 and was easy enough. Gave all my info, had to unlock the CRA so they could do the softpull, thought all was well and was going to wait the 3-5 business days to hear back.

Never heard anything after that so I called back on November 4th to check in. She said I should have an email to upload verification documents - no such thing had come in and she verified my email. Never got that email since then still. She said something wasn't showing up on her end for me so gave me a generic inbox to send my documents to via email (not secure, but whatever). I sent those off that night.

November 10th they confirm they have received my documents. At the 16th now, no further updates.

Just wanted to share in case anyone else was wondering how long it *could* take. I'm not in any rush, just kinda thrown off by how long it's taking to open a plain membership account, not even trying to get savings, card, or loans at this point. We're at 14 business days now, plus take out an extra one for Eta if you want.

They still have limited staffing because of the pandemic so everything is slower with them right now. That being said, the phone call took 20 minutes for me to set up my accounts. I applied and was approved for a card 15 mins later. So it can be very quick if no verification is needed.

I don't doubt it, the phone staff answer quickly and are pretty nice - just no progress so far is all.

Well look at that. Just checked my checking account and see a processing charge of $5 from NFCU. Still no email communication though. Makes me wonder if the guy must have entered my email in the system wrong or something even though he repeated it back to me correctly.

Re: Navy Federal Joining Process

When I applied for membership I did not hear back from them for 2 weeks - I finally called because I happened to be in Las Vegas that week and could visit their Las Vegas branch in person if verification was needed.   No excuse was offered as to why the delay but they did complete the process with me on the phone in a matter of minutes.

To establish timeline, the day I called and they completed the approval process was the very last day they processed membership applications using the Navy League backdoor.
