Navy is a little trickier. You can join through the service of an immediate family member ( mom, dad sister, brother, grandparent). I've read on here that living in the same household as a member can qualify you as well.

I think it extends to siblings, parents, children of members as well.  Same household seems to work as well.

I walked into an NFCU branch, told them anecdotally about my father's commissioning as a naval officer days prior to WW2 and I was in. I also was able to apply on the spot for an NFCU Platinum. No proof of service was demanded. My story happened to be true, but I've heard of people basically bs-ing it, but that's up to the individual.

I wouldnt want to bs Navy. Good way to get kick out permanently and anyone who does so should be ashamed. Our serving members and Vets sacrificied alot for this privilege.

Not eligible for NFCU, personally, but PenFed is pretty solid. They may not have the flashiest products, but if you get in with them, you can get a pretty solid trifecta of cards...and I don't think any of them will have foreign transaction fees or APRs over 20%. I might go this route, myself, one day...

• 4pts on travel ($95, but $100/yr in air travel credits)
• 3pts supermarket, 5pts gas stations
• 2% flat rate (everything else)

Hmm I didnt know all this about PenFed !

Im gonna open an account to establish relationship & look at maybe refinancing my car loan after I close on home in August (hopefully). And whatever other card products I can get.

So I totally lucked out, my grandfather is a retired USAF veteran and also a member of NFCU. I called them this morning and got my membership! Super excited that I got my foot in the door. They told me that I now have the power to give membership to my immediate family members, how cool is that? 

Now I have Penfed and NFCU membership and will work on obtaining credit products that suit me best! Thanks all for the info regarding memberships.

PenFen no longer requires military service. I'm a member of a finance team and was granted membership.

PenFed may be the way for you to go... NFCU asks for more information AND they may audit your account at a later date. You would hate for negative information to later get added to ChexSystems
